SUMMARY:Research Methods
DESCRIPTION:The Teaching Research Methods Forum is organised by the Research Methods @ SHU Hallam Guild group\, and is open to anyone involved in dissertation supervision or teaching research methods at any level. The forum provides an opportunity for members to meet together to discuss common challenges and share approaches to the design and delivery of research-focused teaching. \nThe theme of the next forum is ‘Encouraging Students to Engage with Research’. In this session\, we will discuss the techniques we use to make research methods more engaging to students\, how we might communicate the importance of research\, and ways to highlight the transferrable skills (and resulting employability outcomes) that learning about research will help students to develop. \nThe format of the sessions will be mostly informal discussion\, but if you would be interested in giving a short presentation to the group (approx 5-10 minutes) about any aspect of your research methods teaching at one of the upcoming events\, please get in touch. \nFuture themes will include: \n\nDesigning generic research methods modules\nTeaching research ethics\nSupporting students with literature reviews\nHelping students to identify researchable questions\nAssessment of research methods modules\nEngaging students with statistics\nUsing examples and case studies\nUsing innovative approaches (e.g. games)\nSupervising dissertations\n\nTea and coffee will be provided\, and feel free to bring your lunch along with you. As places are limited\, we would appreciate it if you cancel your place if you are no longer able to attend. If you have any questions\, or if you have any ideas about topics you would like to see covered in future sessions\, please contact Kerry McSeveny\, k [dot] mcseveny [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk.

SUMMARY:Compassion in HE group
DESCRIPTION: Please join us for Show and Tell on 5th of July. \nAs part of the session we are planning to give you an example of what it is like to take part in a learning set. \nI will provide a brief introduction to action learning at the start of the session. \nWe hope that a further two or three colleagues are able to bring and share how they are developing or using compassion as part of their work with students and or colleagues. We know you are trying to improve what you do as a matter of course and if that is the case you are who we are looking for. \nSo if you are developing or want to improve aspects of compassion we are looking for your input: you will have the opportunity to provide a brief overview of what you are doing and how you are doing this. The other attendees will then have the opportunity to ask questions that hopefully help you to come up with ideas to further develop what you are doing. \n  \nKind regards \nPetra Klompenhouwer\, Cathy Malone\, Sally Hinchcliff \n

SUMMARY:From Academic Content to Professional Practice in an hour
DESCRIPTION:Charmaine Myers (Venture Matrix) \nFrom Academic Content to Professional Practice in an hour: A discipline-specific teaching & learning model to support employability and\, potentially\, its assessment: \nThe employability of undergraduates continues to be the focus for the H.E sector. A particular challenge for non-vocational courses is how do we assist learners to link\, often abstract concepts from their discipline area\, to professional practice in the world of work? \nAn on-line transition model has been developed to give new H.E learners an authentic context to a topic from their subject discipline\, supplemented with a selection of authentic tasks to apply this knowledge while drawing on their own experiences.  Finally\, the link to professional practice is provided through video interviews of professionals who put the topic into a real-world context. This session will focus on how the model can help design assessment for employability. Participants will be invited to explore what such an assessment might look like within their own discipline.

SUMMARY:EthicsIR Un-Conference
DESCRIPTION:EthicsIR will be host an EthicsIR Un-Conference\, held at the HUBS on Wednesday 12th June 12.30-3pm. \nAll attendees will receive an EthicsIR booklet of resources which will support future institutional research and evaluation at Hallam. Refreshments and pastries will also be provided. \n12.30-12.45 – Introduction to EthicsIR Unconference – refreshments and pastries – booklet of resources available \n12.45 – 2.00 – ‘A duty of care – researching in a work-based context’ Megan\, Lawton\, Professor of Learning and Teaching in Academic Practice\, University of Wolverhampton (with time for Q&A) \n2.00 – 3.00 – Acting Ethically: Lesson Learnt for Institutional Research and Evaluation (Liz Austen\, Liz Chitwood and Stella Jones-Devitt – Hallam Guild Group Leads) \nMegan\, Lawton\, Professor of Learning and Teaching in Academic Practice  ‘A duty of care – researching in a work-based context’. \nI have been and would still class myself as a practitioner researcher. Below is an extra from my Doctorate that sets out some of my beliefs and professional values: \n“For my research I am not only a Doctoral practitioner/researcher student\, I am an academic in my discipline (learning and teaching); I am also an educational developer working with discipline-based staff on learning and teaching issues. I have a duty of care to my institution\, my department and to my discipline-based colleagues. It is within these different contexts that my research questions sit. I can be seen as being in a privileged position as being a practitioner/researcher gives me access to resources that an outsider researcher would not have. However\, the role of a practitioner/researcher comes with responsibilities not only to the organisation in which I am employed but also to my research participants who are also my colleagues”. \nI am most often positioned as an ‘insider’ within my research\, I can draw on shared understanding and contexts\, ‘trust’ becomes a key word and therefore the ethical considerations of researching within a work-based context are paramount. In this session I want to offer you an insight into two different research methodologies\, Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) that I have used for work-based research. I want to explore why I believe these two methods are appropriate and to consider the ethics related to their use. You will be undertaking some activities related to both of these methodologies. \n

SUMMARY:An Unmasterclass with Anne Boyer
DESCRIPTION:The Roland Barthes Reading group extends to host a more public event\, which one might call a symposium or a convivium\, but perhaps it is closer to a masterclass\, albeit one without mastery (or a class unmastered). We seek to avoid a keynote speaker\, but invite one nonetheless\, ANNE BOYER\, and the more hierarchical structure of a conference\, instead developing something that arises in or from the situation of encounter. This will be an event of readings\, rehearsed or impromptu\, formed in advance in response to a text (Roland Barthes\, of course\, wherever we have reached in our reading of The Preparation of the Novel)\, in response to our guest\, her work\, other guests\, their work\, our work\, and in response to the place of reading. If following the model of ancient Greece\, one may think of works (which some might call literary) taking place in the scene of reading\, central to its pleasure. \n

SUMMARY:'Migration\, Refuge and the University Group' sponsored activity
DESCRIPTION:As part of the EU CultureLabs research project\, a local team of researchers at SHU are organising a workshop held on the 22nd of May at the City Campus of Sheffield Hallam University. \nCultureLabs is a European project funded under Horizon2020 (2018-2021). Working collaboratively across six countries\, it aims to support Cultural Heritage Institutions\, Non-Governmental Organisations\, public administrations and other actors who wish to organise participatory projects aiming at social inclusion via interaction with cultural heritage. \nAs migrant communities are a primary focus of the project\, we are seeking individuals based in Sheffield who have experience in tackling issues with migration and migrant communities. \nThe workshop will focus on gathering professional feedback on four participatory projects that the project is working on and that are aimed at achieving social innovation through cultural heritage-based activities. People that are subscribed to this mailing list are therefore invited to participate in our co-creation activities (which will include presentations from the projects organisers as well as role-playing activities) taking place on the morning of the 22nd of May from 9:30 AM to 1 PM to provide their comments and feedback\, and also to learn more about the project and meet our team. \nTravel costs will be covered by the project organiser. Participants will also be invited to join the CultureLabs team for lunch at the Ambulo restaurant\, located inside the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield. Selected participants in the workshop will be rewarded with a £20 voucher for their time. \nAs places are limited\, the workshop organisers will select the participants based on their background and expertise. If you are interested in taking part\, please send an expression of interest by return email to Dr Danilo Giglitto at Sheffield Hallam University (d [dot] giglitto [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk). \nIf you have any questions\, please do contact Dr Danilo Giglitto (d [dot] giglitto [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk) \n  \n

SUMMARY:PGR Wellbeing Group
DESCRIPTION:We’d like to invite you to the first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group on PGR Wellbeing. \nIt is widely acknowledged that postgraduate research (PGR) study presents a number of risk factors for students’ mental health and wellbeing – expectations of high academic achievement and imposter syndrome; the intensity of and dependence on the student-supervisor relationship; individualised study and feelings of isolation; the normalisation of stress and PGR study; and a perception that core University services are ‘not for PGRs’. Students who are part-time\, international or self-financing may face additional pressures. \nWe would like this group to be a cross-University community of staff and students with an interest in supporting the wellbeing of our PGR students. The group will enable the sharing of experience\, knowledge and skills with the aim of ensuring that our policies\, culture and practices support good mental health and wellbeing\, student satisfaction and academic achievement. \nThis will be an informal meeting where we will share some initial results from the Student Union’s recent PGR wellbeing survey\, outline our plans for a PGR wellbeing week in May\, and invite your input on the future priorities and activities of the group. \nPlease note we will not be providing refreshments but feel free to bring your lunch to the meeting. \nPlease book via Eventbrite \nWe hope to see you there\, and please forward this information to anyone else who may be interested \nBest wishes \nKathy Davies SHSU 2018 Postgraduate Student Rep and PhD Candidate in History\nElizabeth Scanlon Researcher Development Adviser\, Research and Innovation Office\nSarah Smith Doctoral School Manager\, Research and Innovation Office\nAlison Worsley Academic Representation Manager\, SHU Students’ Union \nIf you’re not able to attend this first meeting but would like to be part of the group\, please email doctoralschool [at] shu [dot] ac [dot] uk to register your interest. SUMMARY:Embedding and assessing the micro skills of compassion in student group work
DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nThe first meeting of the Hallam Guild Group – Compassion in Higher Education will be an opportunity to meet colleagues with an interest in this area from across the university\, and will also include Guest Speaker Theo Gilbert\, University of Hertfordshire (click here for Speaker Bio) \n‘Embedding and assessing the micro skills of compassion in student group work’ \nThis workshop will offer you fascinating background insights into what is happening in the science of compassion these days and why it has become a ‘must-watch’ space for educators everywhere. The workshop will explain some very practical\, compassionate micro skills for students (and staff) to bring to their group work/team work – in ways they may not have thought of before. Compassion can be defined as: noticing\, not normalising\, distress or disadvantaging of yourself or others – and doing something about it. We will have a chance to try some of these micro skills out together. We’ll see how quick and easy they are to teach\, support and assess. You will discover why they do not detract from but only sharpen students’ investment in their target subjects\, why they are helping to enhance student wellbeing/interculturalism – and how findings suggest they could help dismantle the institutionally-constructed aspects of the BAME attainment gap. \nRefreshments will be provided\, we look forward to seeing you there \nCathy Malone

SUMMARY:Hallam Pracademia
DESCRIPTION:Following the initial success of the Hallam Guild-funded ‘Hallam Pracademia’ programme across the Departments of Law and Criminology\, and Psychology\, Sociology and Politics\, we’re inviting former/current practitioners who now lecture at Sheffield Hallam University to join us at one of our two launch events for the wider roll out of the programme. \nThese interactive events will encourage you to share your views as to what you would like to see included in the Hallam Pracademia programme and what skills\, experience and/or ideas you can bring. In the initial sessions\, we ran things such as: a T-break where people worked in groups to reflect on and share their thoughts and ideas about different aspects of their teaching practice\, an academic advice-themed Winter Walkshop and an academic/practitioner event to identify potential opportunities for collaboration. \nWe would really like to hear your ideas as to how we take the programme forward from here. \nLocation – City Campus\, Owen 1032
