Developing Disciplinary Writing Communities

Purpose of the proposed group
To support the development and sharing of effective literacy practices across year groups, initially in one department.

Objectives of the proposed group
Following our small scale pilot we wanted to work to further embed key literacy practices in the tutorial stream (ADAPT) and continue to offer local opportunities to develop writing in disciplinary groups through use of Retreats, Exemplars and Writing Circles. These initiatives currently sit alongside the taught curriculum. In this way we want to create a supportive local disciplinary writing community that encourages engagement in effective literacy practices through peer teaching and learning. This context & support appears key to development of individual agency among particularly marginalized and peripheral groups of students. As a group we are interested in discussing with colleagues from inside and outside the institution their approaches to embedding literacy and engaging disciplinary writing development.
