Writing a Welcome

19 April – 30 May 2021

This writing project will be run in partnership with City of Sanctuary, Sheffield (CoSS), Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English (SAVTE), Sheffield Conversation Club and Change the Word.

Participants will meet with new arrivals into Sheffield who are seeking Sanctuary. They will explore ideas of welcome and find out the challenges faced by new arrivals by participating in conversations over Zoom and by planning and running creative writing workshops on the theme of Welcome for those currently learning English. There will be sessions on planning creative writing workshops and sessions which give context regarding the UK government’s approach to asylum and refugee issues and which introduce the Sanctuary movement.

Students taking part will:

  • Acquire a deeper understanding of the topics of migration, asylum and seeking sanctuary
  • Develop their cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills
  • Improve their knowledge of the cultures represented in the project
  • Be able to complete the Global Citizenship Portfolio
