{"id":2623,"date":"2016-01-18T09:55:42","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T09:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/global\/?p=2623"},"modified":"2016-01-18T09:55:42","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T09:55:42","slug":"right-to-rent-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/global\/right-to-rent-checks\/","title":{"rendered":"Right to Rent Checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you living in privately rented accommodation?<\/p>\n<p>If so then you need to be aware that from 1<sup>st<\/sup> February 2016 onwards, landlords of private rental accommodation will be responsible for carrying out \u2018right to rent\u2019 checks to ensure that their tenants have the right to reside in the UK. The requirement to carry out right to rent checks applies to all adults (aged 18 and over).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore <u>all students<\/u> living in private rented accommodation will need to present their original passport, or a combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/370484\/document_guidance_for_landlords.pdf\"><u><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">acceptable documents<\/span><\/u><\/a> to prove they have the right to reside in the UK for the duration of their tenancy agreement.<\/p>\n<p>International students will also have to present their visa and biometric residence permit (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/370484\/document_guidance_for_landlords.pdf\"><u><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">List B<\/span><\/u><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Landlords are required to keep copies of the documents they check.<\/p>\n<p>This will not affect students living in halls of residence as they are not subject to right to rent checks.<\/p>\n<p>If you have further questions about this you can speak to an International Experience Adviser in a daily drop in appointment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you living in privately rented accommodation?
