{"id":2370,"date":"2015-10-01T13:25:06","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T13:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/isnews\/?p=2370"},"modified":"2015-10-01T13:32:41","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T13:32:41","slug":"2370","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/global\/2370\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadline approaching for Culture Connect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Would you like to apply for our\u00a0new volunteer peer mentoring scheme called\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Culture Connect?\u00a0<\/span>It will help you to\u00a0meet people from different countries, develop your\u00a0cultural awareness and gain valuable experience for your\u00a0CV.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Your\u00a0commitment<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The scheme is very flexible around your\u00a0studies. You will\u00a0 meet your\u00a0mentee\/mentor a minimum of 4 times from October to April. You will\u00a0receive an induction to ensure you\u00a0get off to a good start, then there will be regular employability skills training and networking events to meet wider participants on the scheme. By taking part in Culture Connect, you will be eligible to apply for the prestigious Hallam Award (organised by the Students&#8217; Union).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Would you like to\u00a0apply to become a mentor (student helping)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You will help mentees settle into university life and gain volunteering experience for your\u00a0CV. Ideal candidates will be familiar with university services and will have taken part in extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Would you like to apply to become a mentee (student being helped)?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You may\u00a0be a\u00a0new student who would like to learn about other cultures, adapt to life in Sheffield and improve your communication (and\/or language skills).<\/p>\n<p>You\u00a0may want to discuss<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ways to meet people from different countries<\/li>\n<li>Other\u00a0cultures and differences from your home country<\/li>\n<li>extracurricular activities and community events<\/li>\n<li>small talk and making friends<\/li>\n<li>other places to get support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Watch a video summarising the scheme<\/span><\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/youtu.be\/qycVDTQKQ-Q<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">More student videos and case studies\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Previous participants on the scheme described mentoring as &#8216;learning through sharing&#8217; and &#8216;wherever you&#8217;re from, you belong. Both mentees and mentors reported improving their cultural awareness, time management and communication skills.
