Baking demonstration by Paul Benson

Article written by journalism student Chloe Botham:

Baker, Paul Benson will be showing off his talented baking skills in a demonstration at SHU Fest on Tuesday 1 March.

SHU staff member Paul, has been a keen baker ever since he was a small boy after watching his mum on baking days, encouraging him to try it out for himself.

With the rise in popularity in baking ever since The Great British Bake Off aired, Paul explained that people are getting a real sense of achievement from baking themselves. He said: “The pleasure is in the doing, seeing the end result and filling your home with a beautiful aroma.”

Paul took his love of baking even further last year, when he started making wedding cakes for loved up couples. He said: “It was a real test of what I had learned and practised over the years. It was a challenging project, but very rewarding when I handed over the finished cake. It was a great feeling.”

With years of experience under his belt, Paul still has the occasional disaster occur in the kitchen, ones which he hopes don’t happen on demonstration day! He said: “It’s all part of the learning experience. Many bakers who have been baking for many years still drop the occasional clanger; it’s what keeps you sharp. Never give up, just keep on baking.”

Paul will be sharing his special recipes for shortbread and ginger biscuits, for all those attending the baking demonstration, which may even include a taster of the sweet treats.

The event will be held at: Kitchen, level 12, Owen Building at 12-1.30pm.

New Project : Healthy Relationships

The international experience team is starting an exciting project! Our project will provide support and advice to international students on the topic of personal relationships. We want to increase the support available about personal relationships, including  information about sexual health and sexual consent. We have two special announcements about our project:

1) Quick Questionnaire

Do you have 2 mintues to help us?

In order to offer the right kind of support, we would really like to hear opinions from our international students. We have a very short questionnaire with 8 questions. We would by grateful if you can fill it in by 16 November. Here is the link

We understand students might feel embarassed to give opinions about this topic. However, all answers on the questionaire are completely ANONYMOUS.  This means we do not know your name or your student number. We have no way to trace the answers to any student. Please be reassured that your opinions are completely private and safe.  Thank you. Your opinions will help us shape the project and how best to provide the support.

2) Job Opportunities

We are currently recruiting for 4 Student Health Facilitators. The facilitators will help us lead sessions for international students on the topic of personal relationships, sexual consent and sexual health. You can find full details of the position here if you are interested in applying: https://careerservice.shu.ac.uk/students/jobs/detail/297795/student-health-facilitator

The deadline is 9am, 16 November.

Have your say… suggest a title to help build the library collection!

190 titles were requested when we ran this promotion in March.

Now it’s your turn!

Between 2nd – 9th Nov you can suggest a title you’d find helpful to have in the library.

So get your thinking caps on and titles read. Live links will be available on the Library Gateway, twitter and here on Monday 2nd Nov!

Here’s how it works –

  • we’ll buy an e-book version of your suggestion if it’s available/suitable and we don’t have it already, (not all books are available as e-books). Or alternatively we may buy a single copy of a book.
  • we’ll let you know if we order it and if not why not
  • when the book arrives we’ll place a copy on request for you and email to let you know when it’s ready to collect.
