TAR UC students back in Sheffield after four years

Two of our Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) students from 2012 intake recently returned to Sheffield to explore the place that they studied back in summer 2012. Here’s a brief account of their stay here reminiscing their old memories and exploring places in the UK that they didn’t cover when they were here as students four years ago.

Jethro Wong, studied BA Hon Business with E-Commerce and Marketing said “After completing my studies I went back to Malaysia and worked for 3 months for a marketing company. Afterwards I moved to work for an enterprise mobility company, focusing on IT security which is where I am currently working now. The course that I studied at Sheffield Hallam made it possible to find a graduate job back in Malaysia and to reach where I am today. Coming back to Sheffield made me realise how quickly time flies and I am looking forward to exploring places in the UK which I didn’t have the chance to previously. I am especially looking forward to going to places such as Durham and Lincoln.”

Kimberly Boey, who also studied BA Hon Business with E-Commerce and Marketing, said “When I went back to Malaysia, I did various jobs related to digital marketing and mobile advertising which are both rapidly developing areas in Malaysia. Afterwards, I spent two years working for an advertising network company focusing on sales and business development which I enjoyed. Coming back to Sheffield after four years, it doesn’t feel like it has been that long! I still remember all the places I used to go, and they are still there! There are also new places too and I have missed Sunday roasts in the UK, which you cannot get in Malaysia. I am looking forward to exploring the Peak District during my holiday here, as I want to explore the views and scenery of my favourite film, Pride and Prejudice.”

A warm welcome to our new students in Botswana

Sheffield Hallam University is proud to welcome nearly 400 new students on its undergraduate courses at Botswana Accountancy College.

Says David Graham, Principle Lecturer in Sheffield Business School “The collaborative course leaders and I look forward to welcoming the BAC students into the Sheffield Hallam family. Inductions have already taken place using Video Conference technology to reach out the hand of friendship into Botswana and BAC.

This year we are welcoming around 400 students into SHU UG programmes delivered at BAC with pipeline plans to expand the provision with BAC into Masters qualification. As always we are proud to be working with BAC and making a small, but significant contribution to the Botswana government `Vision 2020` policy in the creation of a knowledge economy.”

Suzhou College visits SHU

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery and the Department of Allied Health Professionals hosted a two week visit of 11 students and five academics from Suzhou Health College, China. The students are currently undertaking a diploma in either nursing or rehabilitation studies at Suzhou Health College and are hoping to come to SHU in September 2018 to undertake a BSc (Hons) Health Studies in either nursing or rehabilitation. The visit provided the students with the opportunity to experience British culture, to experience Sheffield and SHU and also to experience different approaches to teaching. The students also delivered presentations on what they love about Sheffield.

The academics were also interested in observing different approaches to teaching but also to explore the differences and similarities between China and the UK’s healthcare provision. They had the opportunity to visit the Hallamshire and Rotherham hospitals, observe multidisciplinary team meetings and to visit a community centre.

This visit helped the students and staff from both sides to explore different ways of working, as well as for SHU staff to show our delegates from China what makes Sheffield so great! We are looking forward to welcoming our students in September 2018 to show them even more that SHU and Sheffield has to offer.

Hong Kong students visit the Sheffield Business School

In June 2016 SBS were delighted to host a group of 24 students and two staff from Hong Kong on a week-long study and cultural visit.

The students had just completed their Business Higher Diplomas with the Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) which is part of the Vocational Training Council (VTC) in Hong Kong. SBS has a ten year collaboration with SHAPE, also part of VTC, and many IVE students progress to SHU top up awards in Hong Kong.

The students enjoyed a mix of educational, professional, cultural activities as well as having free time to enjoy local food, shopping and make new friends.

They joined students in classes in SBS and met with current SBS students to discuss the differences in teaching and learning experiences. They visited Chatsworth House where a talk on Chatsworth as a business was provided. The students provided Instagram presentations on their final day to reflect on their visit, which was nicely rounded off with a  British favourite – fish and chips!

SHU hope to deliver more events such as this in future years to give this opportunity to more VTC students and strengthen our collaboration.

Ms Lorraine Koobokile – Head of Student Support and Welfare

Welcoming the students to the Botswana Accountancy College, the students were taken through what the institution stands for; what it wants to achieve; its missions and vision; its partnerships and what is expected for them to be students that represent the Botswana Accountancy College brand. To facilitate this, the registry department presented on issues pertaining to student allowances and briefed them on the registration process of the College. The students and welfare department advised students about campus life and the school’s learning environment.

The portfolio manager of SBL, Mr Aubrey Mbewe, took the students through basic information a student ought to know to carry them through each semester e.g. pass mark, fail and discontinue, reports and supplementary examinations etc. The students were given the semester timetable as classes were commencing the same week on the 15th June. On the second day, there was an orientation by the Library and ICT where the students were given information guidelines on how to access the College’s computers, internet, online resources and how to use the library. This day was also about familiarising the students with the campus facilities.

Botswana Accountancy College visits SHU

Sheffield Business School were honoured to be visited by our strategic partner from Botswana Accountancy College; Gaborone and Francistown. The senior delegation of Serty Leburu (Executive Director), Dr Byron Brown (Dean of Business and Leisure), Dr G. Male (Deputy Executive Director), Mr A. Mbewe (Portfolio manager – business) and Mrs M Mokgosi (Head of Marketing communications) met with senior faculty staff, toured the campus, dined with the Vice Chancellor and presented two papers at the partnership conference.

The visit and hosting by SBS underpinned the richness of the collaborative partnership as the success of the first delivery of the BA International Banking and Finance in 2015/16 and going forward three top-ups, MBA and Masters is planned for 2016/17. The relationship continues to grow with a wider collaborative engagement in research, staff and student exchanges and a joint conference planned for 2017 in Gaborone. The first SHU/BAC students are due to graduate next year which will be testament to the hard work and dedication of both institutions.

Welcoming City University of Hong Kong students

This is our first year running the Cultural and Language Immersion scheme with our partner institution, City University of Hong Kong.  This is a month long scheme and we have welcomed 32 students who are all second year undergraduate students from a range of courses in the building and construction area. The course is based around improving their English as well having course related activities with visits to the Peak District and sustainable living projects.

We have designed an intensive schedule of social events for this cohort of students; activities include visits in the local area such as Kelham Island Museum, afternoon tea in Bakewell and Weston Park Museum. The local trips are designed to provide them with a broad range of opportunities to immerse themselves in British culture and living in homestays reinforces this as they have every opportunity to learn more about the UK and Sheffield.

Also we have organised two weekend trips to help them explore more of the UK. The students will visit Edinburgh and London, which includes a trip to see the Lion King in the West End and the historical Tower of London.

“We really enjoyed our visit to a local primary school! The children are so energetic compared to school children in Hong Kong as they were so engaged in what we were showing them. We showed them how to make paper aeroplanes, watched some Hong Kong cartoons and taught them how to write their names in Chinese. This has been an opportunity not to be missed” WONG, Kai Yin (Jason) and NG, Ka Ying (Kate) school visit

Staff Exchange Programme

From Monday 23 May, the International Experience Team hosted guests from all across Europe, including delegates from Spain, Poland and the Czech Republic for a week of Internationalising Student Support; they visited for a five day programme of seeing how the University supports students, as well as to learn about Sheffield itself.

There were talks from support services across the University, tours of the campuses and even some local Sheffield dialect! We had a fantastic time learning from each other and hearing how our cultures differed, leading to some lively debate on how best to  support and communicate with our students while they are studying.

The week was a great success and we’d like to think that our Erasmus visitors got as much out of the exchange as we did; hopefully we’ll get to go across to the continent and see how things work in their countries in the near future!

Karabo Phalane from Botswana wins the Inspirational Student Award

It’s our pleasure to announce one of our fantastic Inspirational Student Award winners: Karabo Phalane!

Karabo Phalane is from the Botswana Accountancy College and received a magnificent six nominations! Here is a short introduction from the man himself and a selection of some of the great feedback that we received as part of his nominations:

“Karabo Phalane is the course rep for IFB. He has managed to bridge the gap between the students and the module leaders . He has managed to present the students issues very well and give feedback to students. Also he has provided some mentor-ship to some students who were not very serious with their studies.”

“Outstanding student leadership. He keeps all students up to date on the changes in lessons or extra lessons. He is an exemplary leader as he is always the first to break the ice by answering in class. The student is also always willing to assist other students when they need help.”

Here’s an interview with Karabo, where he gives his top tips for success:

A massive congratulations to all of our winners and nominees, we love to hear about the achievements of our students in our partnerships across the world! If you know any inspirational colleagues or students where you study, then keep an eye out for the nominations next year and they could be one of our winners featured.
