Join Culture Connect mentoring scheme

Wherever you’re from, you belong!

The aim of Culture Connect is to help new students settle into life in the UK and have a positive university experience. All current UK and international students can apply to become mentors and mentees. There will be regular training and social activities for all members.

Mentees

You may need help meeting new friends and adjusting to a new culture and social norms. Your mentor will help you integrate into the community and meet people from different countries, as well as introducing you to the wide network of support available at Sheffield Hallam University and beyond.

Mentors

We encourage students who have taken part in extracurricular activities to get involved as mentors. Culture Connect is a great way to meet new people, develop cultural awareness and gain valuable experience for your CV.

Want to work in the UK after your studies?

Would you like some visa advice?
If yes, then book a place on our Working in the UK after studies workshop.

We will look at all the possible visa routes for international graduates into full time work including:

• Tier 2 Scheme
• Tier 1 graduate entrepreneur
• Tier 5

The workshop will also focus on how to improve your employability and how you can make the most out of your time at Sheffield Hallam University. We will explain the visa rules and how to maximise your chances of success.

The last workshop will take place in the Careers and Employability Centre (unless otherwise stated):

Is your visa due to expire?

If you do not book a one-to-one appointment to see an immigration adviser at least 2 weeks before your visa is due to expire, then we may not be able to assist you with your application and you will have to send your documents off yourself.

You must attend a group session before you can book a one-to-one appointment.

It is important that you attend a group session at least 2 months before your visa is due to expire. You will be unable to get a CAS application form if you have not attended a group session.

The next group sessions will be taking place as follows:

August

  • Tuesday 18 – 10am
  • Thursday 27 – 1pm

September

  • Thursday 3 – 2pm
  • Thursday 17 – 2pm

Please come to the Student Services Centre, Level 5 Owen or Heart of the Campus to book on to a group session.

Air BnB Email Fraud

The Advice Centre at Sheffield Hallam has been made aware of email fraud linked to the Air BnB accommodation booking website.

Please be aware when using this website that payments are made through the site and not via a bank transfer.

Students are receiving emails from fake Air BnB accounts asking for payments to be made outside of the website to a personal bank account.

Air BnB’s terms and conditions state that this is not how they take payment. You can find extra guidance on this on the Air BnB website.

Always read the terms and conditions before making a payment online.  If you have any doubt when booking accommodation please come to the Advice Centre and an Advisor can talk you through how to spot fraud.

If you are worried you may have made a payment to a fraudulent account please come and see us at the Centre or visit the Action Fraud webpage for further details.
