This week’s picture is one of campus as we gear up for clearing and a-level results day it seems the perfect picture.
Important stuff for tomorrow:
You may have seen Vanessa’s email clarifying what we can and cannot do tomorrow whilst clearing is active but in case you missed it here is a refresher.
Please note, due to the scale and complexity of this remote operation, use of the remote desktop and VPN are being prioritised for the Clearing operation on 13 August. So, if you’re not involved in Clearing please don’t use these services on this day – there’ll be reminders in We Are Hallam leading up and PC pop-ups on the day.
What you can use
- Core and e5 Back Office Horizon remote desktop
- vWorkspace to remote on to your office PC
- ePay vpn
What you shouldn’t use
- Staff remote desktop – Horizon
- Staff remote desktop – vWorkspace
- SHU Staff vpn (Cisco or Global Connect)
Many services can be used without the need to connect to VPN or remote desktop, guidance is available on the DTS Working Remotely web pages

Charles Street – bookings for staff extended
The University are opening up the bookings to all staff who would like to spend time working back on campus and the limit of one day per two weeks has also been removed (note, though, that the restrictions still apply to PGR students). Staff can book for any number of days up to two weeks in advance (but cannot make a recurring booking). Bookings are still only available for individuals at the moment, and for the whole day.
The procedure for booking space through resource booker remains the same and before returning to campus you must have a discussion with your line manager.
It would also be helpful if you’re familiar with both the Guide to Working in Charles Street building and the guidance to working safely on campus
For more information on the re opening of the campus you can get updates here.
All staff briefings and questions from the sessions now available to view
If you head to the beyond COVID pages on the staff intranet you can find recordings of all of the staff briefings plus a plethora of other information related to the COVID outbreak and what it means for the University.
Links to the recordings of the sessions and also to the questions can be found here.
Digital skills for staff
Digital Thursdays offer a series of workshop and webinar events that focus on the use and exploration of tools, skills and practices to help Hallam staff become more digitally confident.
These events are open to all staff and although some sessions relate directly to teaching and learning, they do provide an overview of the tools, resources and legislation that affect all aspects of our work. This programme forms part of a collaborative training and support offer developed by teams across the University and seeks to foster ongoing conversations about digital practice. Find out more and how to book from the Digital Development page.
