Final contribution from Ros Wastnidge – Green Champion

Around six years ago I volunteered to be a part of a small team in Finance whose remit was to highlight sustainability issues in the Directorate, and to communicate to colleagues how we might examine our behaviours around these issues to improve our environment, both in the office and in the wider world.  At the time I didn’t expect that this would impact on my own thinking around environmental issues, but I was wrong.

At the same time the University was launching its network of Green Champions, which I had no intention of joining.  Again, I was wrong.

Being involved as a Green Champion in the University is one of the best things I’ve done in my almost 25 years working at Sheffield Hallam.  I’ve met many similar like-minded people from all areas of the institution, whom I would never normally come into contact with and we’ve debated over energy, waste, cycling, car sharing and even growing your own fruit and veg.  I’ve been involved in promoting all the campaigns over the years and fed back all your great ideas that you’ve often suggested.

There really is a want out there to improve our environment and every one of you can do something to help.

It’s time for me to hang up my Green lanyard now and to say good bye to you all.  Thanks for reading my offerings, I hope you’ve enjoyed them and found them useful.

Rachel Devaney, Wendy Kay, Rachel Parnham and James Rainbow are your remaining Green Champions and I’m sure they’ll keep you well informed in the future.

I’ll leave you with this

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”
