Finance and Planning Away-Afternoon 2018

Thank you to everyone who attended and got stuck in to our away-afternoon on 13 July; and thank you for sharing your feedback about the event.

After a bit of a false start to this year’s away day the afternoon went without a hitch (apart from Brian’s paper cut!)

To start the afternoon we gathered in our work teams to reflect on our individual and team successes over the last 12 months; and using the materials provided we put together our own magazine/newspaper covers to celebrate our achievements.

These were great!  Lots of creativity, sport, drink and food references!  Click on the images below to view in a larger slideshow to find out what everyone has been up to, including which team:

  • makes the impossible possible
  • has a Berry-tasty page 3
  • is celebrating the success of the milk club!
  • are passionate spirits
  • has a recipe for success that includes Love Island and drinking cocktails….”I just felt numb”….
  • is fun, but has a terrible name
  • has travelled the long and winding road

After the break we worked in mixed teams to build a ‘bridge over the River Don’.  This was an activity with a twist, where teams only had 10 minutes to agree their bridge designs before being split in to two to each build half of their bridge without being able to communicate for the next 30 minutes.

Serious plans were made.

Technical drawing! (Jon and Dave)

and much sellotape was used.

Teams eventually got back together to stick their bridges together in the hope that each bridge could hold a small bottle of water for 15 seconds.  When putting this activity together I thought that this would be a true test and discarded the idea of using tins of coke as I thought they would be too heavy; but I had underestimated you all!  When we said that you could use anything on your tables you took this quite literally with sellotape rolls, pens and scissors being used for ballast; and in the end every single bridge passed the test.

Well done everyone!  I hope you all enjoyed it as much as Lorna and I did.  You can view more photos of the afternoon on our Flickr page.
