What do we do?

The BI Team is based in Strategic Planning and Intelligence. We support the University Leadership team, producing the University Performance reports every month to help assess our progress towards the University Strategy 2020. We are also the owners of The Source – the University’s Business Intelligence hub – where you can find fascinating data and beautiful visualisations about students, staff, and applicants. As a team, we mostly concentrate on student level data, reporting on things like the National Student Survey (NSS), Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE), as well as producing enrolment report and data on retention and progression.

Our tool of choice for data visualisation is Tableau, in which we have become expert users. We offer a consultation service to other internal Tableau users and, to help share our knowledge with colleagues elsewhere in the University, we run a cross-university BI group, snappily named CUBIC.

We also get involved in a lot of behind-the-scenes work. We sense check the Student HESA return to ensure that data is accurate for things like funding and League Tables, and we build and cleanse large data sets based on outputs from the return to use for internal reporting. We also compile the Higher Education Early Statistics Survey (HESES) return.

If you have any data or reporting needs, you can contact us via the ! BI Inbox. We may not be able to answer your question ourselves, but we should be able to point you in the right direction if not!
