International Women’s Day – Three tech trends that will change everyone’s life

Andrew Howard has written us a post this week about International Women’s day and a very interesting talk he attended by LJ Rich…

On International Women’s Day (Thursday 8th March) SHU hosted a joint event with the ACCA (Association Of Chartered Certified Accountants) – a talk by technology journalist and TV presenter LJ Rich on “Three tech trends that will change everyone’s life”.

  1. The first trend was Deep Experiences like algorhythmic cinema that uses sensors to measure a viewer’s heartrate and perspiration to determine what is shown next in a film, every time you watch is different (there’s an academic article about this here).
  2. Altered Reality was the second – for example using an augmented reality headset to completely change how you experience a ride on a rollercoaster (see here) or mixed reality to show directions, instructions and information in real time in apparently empty space (see here).
  3. Sensing technology, the third trend, is technology that reacts automatically to the user, so a fitness app may tell you to go for a run if you have been sitting still too long, a voice stress monitor may phone your best friend if it thinks you are distressed, your phone may take and share a photo when it thinks you are excited or a gesture while you are driving could answer your phone hands-free.

It really was an excellent talk and I managed to snap a picture of LJ and Deborah.
