It’s the first blog of the month which means that even though it’s pay day Friday next week and it feels like we are heading towards the middle of the month I get to bring you our winning calendar competition photo for November. Dave Szwekjowski from ACES Management Accounts submitted his picture of Whitby Abbey looking particularly beautiful on all hallows eve.
Vanessa has an update for us this week on the upcoming Finance and Planning calendar competition for 2018 which gets going on Monday 13th November! Better get snapping.

SHU Allies
You may have seen a few staff walking around with rainbow lanyards on or badges. The people you have seen are our SHU Allies, a network of staff who are advocates, supporters and friends. They are someone that stands up for their colleagues and helps to create a working environment where LGBT+ people feel included and accepted. An ally stands up for & champions LGBT+ equality and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.
Find out why the VC thinks this is an important initiative and head over to the Allies home page for more information and to sign up.

University Leadership Forum Fringe Event
On Friday 8th December Deborah is hosting the next ULF Fringe event. Deborah will be delivering a fast-moving session which will stimulate our thinking about local engagement through an invented scenario that engages participants with the perspectives of different regional actors. The session will be led by Kevin Richardson, who has successfully run variants of this session for universities and other partner organisations, and has kindly agreed to run this for the ‘fringe’ for free! You can find Kevin’s HEFCE blog here.
Hallam Deal
This week the University launched the Hallam Deal, to get everyone up to speed Sally Jackson will be delivering some open sessions on where we are up to which you can book here. The Hallam Deal is a framework which sets out what as an employer we can expect from the University, and as an employee the University expects of us. It’s quite an interesting read and is a key part of the Building a Great University Pillar (BaGU).

Key Reinstallation Attack (KRACK)
KRACK is a newly published attack on wireless communications between a device (smartphone, laptop, Wi-Fi cameras, etc) and the wireless access point and is something which both important to all of us and makes us all susceptible if we are accessing information on our devices over WiFi.
The attack works by interfering with the handshake process that the device and the access point undertake to secure communication between the two.
For more information on KRACK please read the post here.
