Meet the Team – Continuous Improvement

Who are we?

  • Katie Wall: CI Manager
  • Emma Morris: CI Analyst

We are a tiny team of 2, supporting individual staff and business areas across the University to improve processes, systems, services and ways of working. We also have a brilliant back-up team of CI experts within the Business Analyst team who help out with training facilitation (and heaps of other stuff!) Adam Wilkinson is also with us, on secondment from Registry until the end of December this year and is proving to be invaluable!

Our team originated when it was identified that there was a consistent demand on the Business Analysts team for process review work. A small team of BA’s started to develop a CI framework and training offer, and as word spread, the workload increased massively.  In November 2016 a request was approved by the VC for the formal creation of a dedicated CI Service.

What do we do?

Our service sits within Strategic Portfolio & Business Change (formally BIS) and we offer practical support, such as the facilitation of workshops covering process reviews, customer interactions, stakeholder collaboration, problem definition and much, much more!

On average we get around 6 requests for support every month, and we’ve worked with almost every faculty and directorate across SHU. Our initiatives can range from one-off basic process reviews, to developing a full service offer.

We also organise and deliver a four-part modular training course, covering the background and methodology of CI, as well as providing hands-on experience of a wide range of tools and techniques that we use here at SHU. Almost 130 staff have either completed, or are currently signed onto a training cohort.

The modular course has proved to be very popular and each cohort tends to get booked up as soon as it’s released. We have just released the dates onto Core for cohorts 9 & 10 starting in December 2017 and February 2018, so book your place soon before they fill up!

How do you find us?

We are located on Floor 1 in Oneleven, opposite Linda Mason’s office.

You can contact us on ext. 3772, or email us on ! Continuous Improvement

We also post regular updates on Yammer and we’re trying to encourage more people to sign up and share their CI experiences so that we can continue to build on the excellent work going on across SHU.
