Introduction

Mark Swales

  • Developing a new estates masterplan framework and capital plan which will provide a structure for the ongoing development and upkeep of the estate over the next 15 years.
    • New estates vision and principles
    • Initial costs and requirements
    • Clear plans for the delivery of maintenance, major refurbishment and new build projects
    • Between September and December, we will be undertaking consultation work with stakeholders from across the University to develop more firm proposals.

Shaping futures

Professor Christina Hughes

Three core areas have been identified:

  • Employability
    • Immediate priority is students graduating this year, helping them to secure highly-skilled jobs or further study
    • Broader plan to launch this at the beginning of the new academic year
  • Retention 
    • Developing a plan with strong focus on incoming first year students with faculties
  • Inclusive practice
    • Further actions are planned around the concerning BME attainment gap.

Creating knowledge

Professor Paul Harrison

  • Develop our Health Innovation Campus at the Olympic Legacy Park to grow our research and its impact across in healthcare, health technologies, sports, exercise science, food, nutrition and wellbeing
  • Vision work on `what we mean by health innovation’, `what activities and people we expect to be there’ and `what impact we are trying to make’
  • High priority has been given to funding academic leadership to bring together disparate research activity into multi-disciplinary research themes, which will enable us to better compete in the future funding climate.

Leading locally and engaging globally

Professor Karen Bryan

  • Continuing to develop the initial phase of the South Yorkshire Futures programme that aims to improve school outcomes across the region. It will also form the core project in the Sheffield City Region Vision: Education Alliance
  • We have launched a survey for all staff about School and College Governorships, please complete the survey if you are a governor (a SHU representative governor or a parent governor) or if you would consider being a governor.
  • National agendas have not been forgotten steps are being taken to increase our influence with London-based stakeholders.

Building a great university

Richard Calvert

  • Professional Service Operating Model (PSOM)
    • Phase 1 is between now and mid-July, and the programme mandate has been reviewed and approved
    • The new web pages hope to encourage staff engagement with the PSOM
    • Agreeing the principles which will guide the new model – such as a strong user focus, and more consistency across the University
  • IT and systems
    • Roadmap for our technology and systems investment has been endorsed
    • Progress so far includes establishing a solid IT platform, upgrade to Office 365, and work on the data centre strategy
    • Future investment will be in the quality and join-up of the systems which run on the platform
