Hi everyone,
I hope you have all had a good week, there are a few things to update you on this week – but before we get to that I thought to kick off 2017 I would replace cats with some inspiring quotes or pictures for the Friday Feeling. Please feel free to share any you may find inspiring with me so that I can feature it in future ‘the Friday Feelings’.
This week as winter seems to be really settling in, I thought I would share the ‘5 ways to Wellbeing’ which was an initiative created by the Government. The picture below really made me think about some of the things I would like to do in 2017, you can find out more about each circle on our own University Wellbeing pages.
Sustainability Initiatives launch
For those of you who came along to the LICC coffee morning yesterday you may have heard that there is a new action on our action plan to explore different sustainability initiatives that the Directorate can take part in. Our Engagement Working Group will be having a chat about this in our next meeting on 24th January. If you have any thoughts yourself you may want to share these with your engagement champion or come along to the meeting as a buddy.
In last week’s sustainability update Rosalind mentioned that you can also become a Green Champion, please see last week’s post to find out more.
University Mental Health Day
This year March 2nd will be the University mental health day which was created by UMHAN (University Mental Health Advisors Network) in 2012 and is supported by “Student Minds” and “The Alliance for Student Led Wellbeing”. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and “make a noise” about mental health in order to help break the stigma and reach out to those who need support. This years theme is “Active Mental Health” – discussing the relationship between physical activity and mental wellbeing.
If you have any ideas about how the Finance Directorate can be “active for your mental health” on the day and throughout the month of March then please me know.
International Women’s Day
Wednesday 8 March marks International Women’s Day (IWD). Observed since 1909, it is a global celebration of respect, appreciation and recognition of women, while continuing to call for greater equality.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2017 is ‘Be Bold for Change’ and, throughout March, the University is looking to publish profiles of women who have made a difference to their local community. They are looking for people to nominate staff, students and other inspirational local women and we will create profiles which will be visible on Twitter, LinkedIn, the staff intranet and the TV screens around the campus.
To make a nomination please forward your nominee’s full name, contact details and briefly why you feel they should be featured to: InternationalWomensDay@shu.ac.uk by 27 January 2017

Cybersecurity
Digital Technology Services (DTS) are wanting to raise awareness of ransomware attacks. You can find out more about this kind of threat on their blog here.
Protect yourself from this kind of threat, by taking these actions.
- Always check links and web pages to be sure they are genuine; constant vigilance is your best defence.
- Keep your files backed up. If you have other copies of your important files, you will be less pressured by fraudsters’ tricks.
- If you find yourself the victim of an attack, keep a cool head. Don’t give in to demands (even if you pay, you may not get your files back) and turn off your computer immediately. Then telephone IT Help on x 3333 to explain what has happened and ask for advice.
What else this week?
