Networking Success for Psychology Students

Featured

This month the Psychology department, working alongside the Careers and Employment Service and Alumni office, hosted their first alumni networking event. The purpose of the event was to celebrate the achievements of graduates from the department and maintain relationships with alumni, encouraging them to network with each other and hear about other opportunities to stay involved with the university. Over 30 current students also attended and were given the chance to gain insight into the real life experiences of recent graduates and develop their networking skills through discussion and questioning the graduates in small groups.

Start your Christmas shopping!

Next Thursday, students from Art and Design courses will be exhibiting and selling their products at the very first Hallam Hand Made Craft Market, Cantor Atrium 11am – 3pm

Craft professionals will be exhibiting and selling their products alongside the students. The event has been organised by Caroline Nouvellon, our Employment Adviser who works with Art and Design courses, with the assistance of local not-for-profit gallery All Good Stuff on Arundel Street.

The idea behind the event was to provide students with first-hand experience of selling their products.  Caroline hopes that the group will gain an understanding of the planning and preparation that is required, of how to price and display their products, and of how to engage with customers and make sales! Students will have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from craft professionals who will be able to share their own experiences of starting out as independent practitioners.

So, come along and support Hallam students in their venture, and buy something nice for someone special this Christmas!

A student’s views on the new Heart of the Campus

Laura is a final year Psychology student. Here she talks about the new Heart of the Campus Building, where she has been working as a student ambassador.

In September 2014 the new Heart of the Campus at Collegiate opened replacing the old HOTC building and Marshall Hall.  This development at Collegiate is home to Development and Society (Law, Psychology and Social Sciences).

Collegiate is built on a conservation site and this was considered by the architect when designing the new building and as a result the building has been designed to be sympathetic to the surrounding environment. Many of you may have noticed the stag on Broomgrove entrance; this has been designed by the artist Chris Tipping to represent the heritage site through using modern mediums.

Careers and Employability at Heart of the Campus

The academic year is well and truly underway, the leaves are turning red and students and staff are settling into the new Heart of the Campus building at Collegiate.  Beyond discovering the gastronomic delights of The Granary, it’s worth finding out about other new provision on campus.

The new building, and the Student Services hub, has allowed us to offer new and flexible ways of working with students to develop their employability:

  • Careers and employment appointments are available in Student Services, where you will also find career resources
  • Every Tuesday to Friday we offer lunch time drop-in appointments, for immediate support with CVs, application forms or job seeking
  • Weekly workshops are on offer; covering topics such as interview techniques, applying for postgraduate study, finding part time work and using LinkedIn
  • Book in for a realistic Practice Interview, with questions tailored towards a job description of your choice

But this is just the beginning and we plan to expand upon the services on offer at Collegiate.  Look out for Employer Presentations, LinkedIn drop in support and other provision aimed at supporting and building your employability and career aspirations.
