The Careers and Employment Service Sheffield Business School Delivery Team are delighted to announce that one of their projects was a finalist at the prestigious Prospects Postgraduate Awards 2014.
The Prospects Postgraduate Awards are the only annual accolades solely dedicated to celebrating best practice and the most exciting developments in UK postgraduate education.
More than 100 businesses, universities and students from across the UK entered the Awards. The Careers and Employment Service SBS delivery team was one of only five other institutions to reach the final for the title of Best Careers and Employability Team.
The project that caught the judges’ eyes was the Career Bite Size initiative – a series of five themed workshops offered specifically for Postgraduate students within SBS. These sessions were carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of this cohort, which includes a significant proportion of international students. Each interactive session was a free-standing bite-sized introductory workshop on a topic designed to help support students in proactively achieving their career goals for the future (e.g. building your employability or CV writing). Interested students could either dip in and out of the series, opting to attend only those sessions of most relevance and interest, or could register and attend all five sessions to receive a certificate of completion.
Career Bite Size was well supported, hugely enjoyable to deliver and received consistently enthusiastic feedback from students. It was observable that students gained enormously in confidence from undertaking role play activities alongside their peers, and through engagement in career bite size sessions, went on to become ‘super-users’ of the careers service, taking advantage of the wealth of other events, workshops and support available to them during their studies.
SBS have been great supporters and enablers of the project; helping to promote it to students. The endorsement of academic colleagues is powerfully illustrated by these two quotes:
“The Career Bite Size offer has provided a unique and innovative opportunity for our post graduate students in their busy and often demanding academic year to engage in our career support activities in a time efficient and effective way. It has been a really important initiative which has proactively helped prepare our students to compete effectively for international jobs.” Isobel Doole, Head of PG for Sheffield Business School
“Career Bite Size delivered exactly what Sheffield Business School post graduate students had been asking for in their course feedback: high quality bespoke career management guidance and support for international students with the opportunity for individual follow-up sessions, and with associated certification for those who attended the full programme.” David Laughton, Head of Learning Teaching & Assessment for Sheffield Business School
The final words however should go to the students themselves; their feedback is the ultimate endorsement of the project. Here are just a two comments evaluating the Career Bite Size series:
- It helps me to improve my confidence to face … interviews in future. It provides useful information about the how to improve skills which needs to become a successful employee …as an international student we have to spend lots of money to live. So I’m thinking of doing a part time job and this session gave me the knowledge to search part time jobs in UK.
- Session is very good. Lectures conduct this session in a friendly way. I like it. I like to ask you all to conduct these sessions in every semester and it will helpful for many students
- When are the next sessions? The session I attended was really good!

Above you can see Lucy Marris and Kent Roach, posing with their certificate.
