Each year our Careers and Employment team take part in the national search for Student Employee of the Year. The first stages involve us hosting our own search which culminates in a prestigious awards night, and then our winners go on to the national level. This nomination is a great addition to a student’s CV and there are also prizes to be won.
We’re looking for employers to nominate students who
- currently combine full time study with part time work?
- were employed on a part time basis at any point between 12 April 2013 and 17 April 2014?
and if you’re a student who meets these criteria then your employer could nominate you to be the next Student Employee of the Year! All the categories this year are new – and there is an on campus and off campus award for each of the three categories:
- Step up to Leadership- for students who have demonstrated their ability to lead teams or projects
- Commercial Awareness – for those students who have made a big commercial impact, maybe improving profits or coming up with an enterprising new idea
- Above & Beyond Award – for anyone who goes beyond their job description to be the best they can be at what they do
In addition to those, there is also a Job Shop/Student Temp Excellence award (on campus only) for students working as temps or administrators for as Student Employment service.
How do the nominations work?
The nomination forms are judged initially at Sheffield Hallam University. Here is the link to nominate and for more information about the awards:
Students need to ask their employer to nominate them. Note to employers – if they worked outside the University select the “Off Campus” category or if On Campus they should select the “On Campus” category when nominating.
When is the closing date?
The closing date for nominations is 17th April.
When is the prize-giving awards ceremony?
We will be holding an awards event on the Thursday 1st May and rewarding winners in all categories.
What happens after that for the nationals?
Nominations will then be forwarded to the Regional and National competitions, with even more prizes to be won.
Is there a prize for Employers?
Students – You can also nominate your employer for the Student Employer of the Year Award (this would mean free publicity for their organisation and may encourage them to nominate you!)
We want as many nominations as possible to celebrate your contributions to part time working and the skills you’ve developed through this.

Need help? If you need any help in compiling a nomination for your employer, come to the Careers Centre and we can help you with this, just log on to a PC and ask.
And how about an extra £30? In addition to the awards, the Careers and Employment team are also offering students the chance to win a prize of £30 by completing this very short survey (by 10th March). The student just needs to complete this on-line form and all those who fill in the form will be put into a prize draw for £30. https://shusls.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_4Ys8a6plyge3pVX
