World of Work Day on 4th February

Sheffield Hallam hosted a World of Work Day which was attended by a group of up to 80 Y10 students (14/15 years old) from local schools and students coming to Sheffield Hallam to do their work experience placement during March.

As part of the day, there was a Sheffield Hallam department ‘carousel’ where different departments from around the University were represented and offered information to the students about working in their respective department and careers.

Trish Bower, Shirley Flynn, Julia Bates, James Waddington and Jenny Miller represented DTS providing information and answering lots of questions from the students, which ranged anything from ’what we liked the most about our jobs?’, ‘what experience was recommended?’, ‘what does the department do? and also offering insight into what it was like to be a placement student.

We also had the opportunity to find out about the inventions the students had been tasked with doing as part of the World of Work Day. The students had come up with great ideas for their inventions ranging from a green gym that recycled plastics and generated energy as people used the gym equipment, to a machine that scanned a person for all of their illnesses, printed their prescriptions and booked follow-up appointments.
