On 16th September, the Special Collections team will be using The Void Cinema and working with DTS staff to exhibit a collection of 16mm films made by students from the late 1960s onwards. The films have recently been digitized and transferred to DCP format to be displayed on the The Void’s 4K DCP projector.
Sheffield Polytechnic, being one of the first higher education institutions in the UK to teach the practice of filmmaking. As such, these films stand as a unique historical record within the University. Some have significant local interest value, and several of our film students went on to successful careers in the film and television industry after graduating. The collection includes fragments of early experimental animation by Nick Park of Aardman Animations/Wallace and Gromit fame as well as an animation with an unreleased soundtrack by The Human League.
The content of the films is wide-ranging, encompassing animation, documentary, experimental film, and drama, and on the whole the standard of the filmmaking is very high.
The event is invite only but if you feel you have a connection to any of the films or want to express interest in attending, contact The Special Collections Team
Also top marks to anyone who can tell us whose Dad (as a student) is in the picture. It’s a current member of staff (hope you don’t mind us using this).
