Welcome to our weekly update about news and upcoming events for the PGR community.
Hope everyone is keeping well and settling into new ways of working. It’s been a big adjustment for us all, but by pulling together we can cope with the new normal for as long as we need to. It’s been inspiring to see so many inventive ways of being together whilst apart via the various social media channels and we’re working on bringing you ways to keep in touch with our community during this time.

1. Library Research Support Drop-In Sessions
The Library Research Support drop in will be open for doctoral and M by Res researchers and staff:
10.00 – 11.00 am on Mondays
2.00 – 3.00 pm on Fridays

2. SHU PGR Virtual Café
We’ve brought forward the launch of the SHU PGR virtual café in the spirit of keeping connected. 3. Creating Knowledge Conference 2020
Whilst the Creating Knowledge Conference unfortunately will not be able to go ahead in the format originally planned, we are working on various sessions to run 9 – 12 June to come together as a research community in spirit, if not in person.
As a PGR student there are various ways that you can get involved:

We are taking expressions of interest, with the closing date of Wednesday 15 April 2020. Please email doctoralschool@shu.ac.uk if you would like to take part and let us know your name and College.
SHU Research Image Showcase 2020

4. Viva Survivors – Getting Creative (blog by Nathan Ryder)

A free 1-hour session on creative and fun viva prep running over Zoom on Wednesday 8 April 2020. If you’re looking to kickstart your viva prep with a smile, or you don’t know how to start, or you feel blocked because of everything going on, this session is for you. In 1 hour we’ll cover the basics of viva prep, what it’s really for, and five creative responses. If you have questions about the viva or prep, this is a chance to get some answers too.
Full details are at the link and places are limited to sixty attendees. The session is free, but if you want to attend you are encouraged to register soon.

5. The Brilliant Club Scholars Programme – Sheffield Hallam University – PhD tutor opportunity – 2020-21
The Scholars Programme is run by The Brilliant Club, an award-winning university access charity. They recruit and train doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to deliver programmes of university-style teaching to pupils in schools that serve under-represented communities.
The Brilliant Club will be running an online webinar on 8 April 2020 at 1pm and 30 April 2020 at 11am, where you can find out more about the opportunity of becoming a Scholars Programme PhD tutor. To access the webinars, please follow the following links:

6. The Journal of Imaginary Research
The Journal of Imaginary Research is now accepting submissions of new short fictional pieces for a special issue, to be published in summer 2020. A key aim of the journal/zine is to encourage colleagues to embrace writing simply for fun, as an act of care. We also hope that reading and writing our imagined works, will bring an enjoyable diversion into your work lives. We are putting together a special issue in recognition that a fun diversion might be welcomed at this unprecedented time. Submissions to kay.guccione@gcu.ac.uk by Friday 24 April, 2020
