The Hallam Academic: Developing your Teaching and Research under the new strategy

The conference begins with keynote overviews of the university strategy from the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Professor Paul Harrison and the University’s new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience, Professor Christina Hughes.

Then some of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities available at Sheffield Hallam are highlighted and how they fit into and help you respond to the new University Strategy ‘Transforming Lives’ is explained. Logistical matters such as accessing and recording CPD will also be addressed.

Who should attend?

This half-day conference is aimed at all academic staff – teaching + research, research-only and teaching-only – and postgraduate research students who are interested in professional development and the CPD opportunities available at the University. It will be suitable for individuals from all disciplines and with all levels of experience.

What will be covered?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the ongoing updating of knowledge and skills related to professional occupations. For academics this involves teaching and research practices, as well as more general personal development. This conference will promote the CPD opportunities available to academic staff and research students. In particular it will:

  • Set out strategic visions for research and teaching and the role of CPD in realising these
  • Update on the Academic CPD project and its outputs
  • Promote online resources on research leadership, supervision, teaching, research integrity and research impact
  • Provide an update on research policies (open access, academic appraisals, personal publication strategies and peer support)
  • Show the range of development resources for academics provided by the university directorates
  • Provide an opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities presented by the new strategy
  • Encourage your input into the development of new CPD opportunities and having your say via staff surveys
