Narrative moves and methods – a workshop for doctoral researchers

Susanne Gannon

Thursday 7th September 1-3 p.m.

Scale Up space, Charles Street building, Sheffield Hallam University, S1 2NE

This workshop will focus on research designs and analytical approaches that might be clustered under the broad rubric of ‘narrative,’ including autoethnography and collective biography and poetic and fictional writing. Drawing on my own work, I consider how feminist and poststructural theories problematize narrative methodologies, and examine the implications of material, affective and posthuman turns for narrative research. Further, I suggest some of the ways that narrative might be deployed as an analytical move in looking at data from interviews and other conventional designs. Rather than a ‘grand narrative’ of narrative methodologies, I position narrative approaches as enabling sorties or incursions into edifices of knowledge-building. Thus, in educational research, narrative becomes a strategy that ‘empowers contradiction and lets history, ethics and desire back in’ (Stronach, 2010, p. 172). Participants are encouraged to bring their own data or narrative writing.

Associate Professor Susanne Gannon works in the Centre for Educational Research and School of Education at Western Sydney University, Australia. She has co-edited seven books, most of them incorporating some versions of narrative methods, many papers in various journals and has recent chapters in Handbook of Autoethnography (2014, Eds. Holman Jones, Adams & Ellis), International Perspectives on Autoethnographic Research and Practice (2018, Eds. Adams, Grant, Short and Turner), Creative Selves/Creative Cultures: Critical Autoethnography, Performance, and Pedagogy (2018, Eds. Holman Jones & Pruyn),  The Routledge International Handbook of Narrative and Life History (2017, Eds. Goodson, Antikainen, Sikes & Andrews), and Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research (5th edn.) (2018, Eds. Denzin & Lincoln).
