Friday 15 March
Enabling healthier lives: Dr Susan Campbell in biosciences has been awarded part of a £2.1million grant from Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and Sparks, the children’s medical research charity, to fund research into the advancement of treatment of Vanishing White Matter Disease (VWMD).
Building stronger communities: Professor Mike Coldwell, head of the Centre for Development and Research in Education, is leading an interdisciplinary team of English teaching specialists, statisticians, psychologists and researchers from across the SSH faculty to evaluate REACH Primary. It’s a programme to help young readers improve word recognition and language comprehension. This is our 13th national randomised control trial (RCT) for the Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF), bringing our income from EEF over the past 5 years to around £1.5m.
Driving future economies: The National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering (NCEFE) is set to be awarded part of a £2m grant researching rice production in China.
NCEFE is the lead partner of the two-year project. It’s scheduled to start in April and, once contracts have been finalised in both the UK and China, will receive more than £330,000 as part of the grant from The Newton Fund UK China Agri-Tech Challenge. The project will look into improving rice processing and rice waste minimisation in China and builds on a £1m Newton Bhabha-funded project in India.

Plans are being developed for a new delivery model for Research and Knowledge Exchange which contain clear and ambitious goals for developing Research and Knowledge Exchange capacity and capability and for growing our research income.

The Research Investment Prospectus launched in August 2018. It outlines a number of funding streams that are being rolled out over the course of this academic year. One of those funds is the Chancellor’s Fellowship and you can see the list of successful applicants here.
Internal funding opportunities are still open for applications and details can be found on the Creating Knowledge Hub’s internal funding pages. These include the New Research Cluster Support Fund and the Impact Acceleration Account, applications for which remain open until 30 April.
We have recently retained our HR Excellence in Research Award. The award is an important mechanism for implementing the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. In retaining this award, we have demonstrated our long-term commitment to the career development of our researchers.

The CK Implementation Plan outlines how we are going to achieve this and this visual provides a helpful overview of what sort of varied activity that covers including REF2021 (the external assessment of a university’s research), research and the student experience and research income.

Our new research website has been launched and focuses on three key themes identified in the CK strategy. These themes (platforms) aim to align research activity across the University; areas of focus in which we are, or have the potential to be, world-class. They are
