What\u2019s been cooking since our last edition?<\/p>\n<p>Sheffield Business School is currently advertising several GTA PhD scholarship opportunities in Hospitality, Tourism, Events and Food &amp; Nutrition (full details on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/phds\/programme\/graduate-teaching-assistant-phd-scholarships-in-hospitality-tourism-events-food-and-nutrition\/?p4561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FindAPhD page<\/a>, and on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/degrees\/phd-scholarships\/university-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SHU website<\/a>), and one of the projects is aligned with CHEFS: \u2018Food events, \u2018sustainability imaginaries\u2019 and shaping consumer perceptions and behaviour,\u2019 working with potential supervisor team of Jennifer Smith Maguire, Mark Norman and Caroline Westwood. We are keen to attract a strong pool of applicants:\u00a0<strong><em>please can you share widely with your networks? <\/em><\/strong>The application deadline is approaching fast: 18 May, noon. More details below.<\/p>\n<p>The latest instalment of our online research talk series was March 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, with \u2018paired papers\u2019 focused on pubs, alcohol and the pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/joanna-reynolds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joanna Reynolds<\/a>\u00a0shared her analysis of how the media\u2019s representations of restrictions on pubs and bars changed over the course of 2020, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/pallavi-singh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pallavi Singh<\/a>\u00a0shared insights from collaborative research on pubs\u2019 and brewers\u2019 changing responses to value creation over 2020. The study, funded through the BA \/ Leverhulme small grants programme, will explore how alcohol provision affects people\u2019s experiences of public spaces, in the context of changing local areas, and the \u2018Build Back Better\u2019 agenda, post-COVID. Deadline: 18 May, noon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/chefscluster\/gta-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Food events, \u2018sustainability imaginaries\u2019 and shaping consumer perceptions and behaviour<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project aims to improve the sustainability of regional food systems through the platform of food events (e.g. food festivals, farmers markets, agricultural shows), focusing on Yorkshire\/Northern England. It explores the construction of food sustainability \u2018imaginaries\u2019 (Taylor 2004): normative conventions and expectations as to what constitutes sustainable food systems, and how people imagine everyday life (e.g., eating, purchasing, choosing, growing), and their roles, identities and relations to others in a sustainable food system.<\/p>\n<p>Building on previous examinations of food events as drivers of sustainability (Lin &amp; Bestor 2020; Organ et al 2015; Star, Rolfe &amp; Brown 2020; Williams et al 2015), the research will:<\/p>\n<p>(1) generate a comprehensive account of how \u2018food sustainability imaginaries\u2019 are constructed through a food event\u2019s experiential, material and communicative dimensions;<br \/>\n(2) devise and evaluate a food event-based intervention through which to enhance consumers\u2019 practices and behaviours in relation to the environmental, socio-cultural and economic sustainability of food.<\/p>\n<p>Potential supervisory team: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/jennifer-smith-maguire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jennifer Smith Maguire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/mark-norman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Norman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/caroline-westwood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline Westwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deadline for submissions 18 May, noon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/chefscluster\/gta-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Further project details available on our CHEFS blog page<\/a>.
