Building Information Guide for Charles Street.

Tours

Tours of the new Charles Street building are being arranged for faculty staff from Monday 29 February.

Registration

Please register for tours so we can make sure they are not over-crowded and so we have details in case further information becomes available in response to questions you may raise.

Contact LEAD via the ! LEAD Directorate Support email address to register on to any of these guided tours or sessions. You can choose options from each of the weeks. If you can, come with a colleague as we would like to encourage discussion.

Please note we are capping all tours at 30 people. We will accommodate more people for the lecture on 14 March.

In all cases meet in the reception area of the building on Charles Street.

Open Orientation

This is an opportunity for any faculty staff to look around the building.

Week beginning 29th February:

• Monday 29 Feb: 9.30-11
• Tuesday 1 March: 11-12.30
• Wednesday 2 March: 2-3.30pm
• Thursday 3 March: 1-2.30
• Friday 4 March: 9-10.30

Academic Orientation

A structured tour of the building lasting 90 minutes is being offered by Learning Enhancement & Academic Development. This tour will focus on teaching and learning in the building. We will explore different features including the ‘turn and learn’ seating in the lecture theatre, the classroom rooms and their relationship to the informal learning spaces, the SCALE UP facility for interactive large group teaching, the use of portable technology and many other new features.

This provides a chance for academics to reflect on how they can enhance practice and get a feel for how learners will adapt to the building.

• Monday 7 March: 10-11.30 (ECI specifically, but others welcome)
• Tuesday 8 March: 11-12.30
• Wednesday 9 March: 2-3.30pm
• Friday 11 March: 1-2.30

Special sessions

These are more focussed sessions for academic staff in the week beginning 14 March. Note that the D&S Faculty Forum is taking place on 16 March and we will not be running special events or tours on that day.

Monday 14 March: 12.00-1.00

Active Learning in Large Groups – an interactive lecture in which we will explore large group teaching together, hear from practitioners and students, and try out integrated technologies.

Tuesday 15 March: 12-1.30pm

“SCALE UP” – This session will introduce Student-Centred Active Learning for Upside down Pedagogies. The session will take place in the Charles Street SCALE UP room. This is dependent on the current state of technology installation. If not, we will use the lecture theatre.

Friday 18 March: 2-3.30

“Making it stick” – Exploring the connections and possibilities emerging from location, space and technology, this session will look at how the informal spaces can be used to support and enhance student learning.

If you can’t make any of the tours then you can view images from the tours that have been taking place for a virtual look around the building in our image gallery.

You can also take a look at the floorplans, where your team space will be located and the visualisations of spaces in the Floorplans section of this site.

Charles Street ‘open house’

All University staff are being given an opportunity to take a look around Charles Street, the University’s newest City Campus building, before it fully opens to students on 4 April.

This ‘open house’ event, hosted by the estates development and sustainability team, will give you the chance to visit the building and explore it at your leisure before staff begin to move in on 21 March. Whether you want to spend five minutes or two hours, you can drop in at any time between 1.30pm and 4.30pm to discover our new state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment and learn more about the building from estates colleagues.

Booking is not required, but staff are encouraged to register their interest in attending by completing the booking link here.
