Welcome to the Charles Street Building Information Guide!

The £32million investment in Charles Street, which opened in 2016, is part of the University’s overall aim to improve the student experience and enhance the University’s reputation. Situated on Arundel Gate it provides a home for the Sheffield Institute of Education – part of the Faculty of Development and Society – which brings together the University’s teacher education provision and education research.

Taking in seven storeys in the heart of the City Centre, the development includes a 271 seat lecture theatre, teaching rooms, learning spaces, staff spaces, cafe and reception. The innovative design also includes outside terraced areas and a specially-commissioned bridge designed by Corin Mellor, connecting the Charles Street to the University’s Arundel Building.

Corin’s father, the acclaimed metalworker and artist David, had his first factory in the Little Mesters area of Arundel Street, overlooked by the new bridge. Corin says the distinctive design for the bridge was modelled on his daughter’s slinky.  Corin Mellor is a leading designer and manufacturer, a key figure in the region’s creative industry and a good friend of the University. Born in Sheffield in 1966, Corin trained as a product designer and worked for the London architects YRM, before joining his father at David Mellor Design.

Corin’s public seating can be found in the Lowry Gallery in Salford Quays, the Millennium Galleries and Winter Garden in Sheffield.
