{"id":9912,"date":"2021-02-20T15:04:51","date_gmt":"2021-02-20T15:04:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=9912"},"modified":"2021-02-22T15:05:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T15:05:56","slug":"the-life-cafe-at-dying-dialogues-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/the-life-cafe-at-dying-dialogues-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"The Life Caf\u00e9 at Dying.Dialogues conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 29<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/claire-craig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Claire Craig<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/helen-fisher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helen Fisher<\/a> presented \u2018<strong>The Life Caf\u00e9: Thinking Through Things<\/strong>\u2019 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dyingseries.ca\/\">Dying.Dialogues <\/a>conference. <strong>Dying.2021<\/strong> \u2018offers an opportunity to creatively engage in conversation about\u00a0fragility, death, dying, loss, grief\u00a0through the lens of art and design.\u2019 Hosted by Design TO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthdesignstudio.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OCAD University<\/a> and Taboo Health, it was the perfect forum to share this research and open a dialogue about how the objects we own can support meaningful conversations about end of life and loss.<\/p>\n<p>The use of objects and critical artefacts as a method to enable conversations was presented through a series of Lab4Living projects, starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/projects\/exhibition-in-a-box\/\">Exhibition in a Box<\/a>, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifecafe.org.uk\/\">Life Caf\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/projects\/trails-enabling-ongoingness\/\">Enabling Ongoingness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/projects\/the-100-year-life-end-of-life-death-and-bereavement\/\">The 100-Year Life<\/a>. Within the context of the 100 year life, a consideration of the role of design at end of life and death is important.\u00a0This enquiry continues funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/projects\/the-100-year-life-project\/\">Research England (E3<\/a>), interrogating how conversations around care, end of life and grief can be better enabled within the home and how the objects we own can support this.<\/p>\n<p>Helen and Claire presented a paper and poster to the conference&#8217;s audience of artists, designers and clinicians, leading to some lively debate and questions:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2018Fascinating work, thank you for sharing!
