{"id":971,"date":"2015-06-04T13:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T12:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=971"},"modified":"2019-02-04T17:08:41","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T17:08:41","slug":"research-seminar-shirley-lindley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/research-seminar-shirley-lindley\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday 04 June 2015 &#8211; Lunchtime seminar with SHU CCRC&#8217;s Heath Reed, Ivan Phelan and Shirley Lindley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Title: Medic of the Future: Exploring  the integration of immersive Virtual Reality with haptic and tactile feedback in a medical training environment for the MoD<br \/>\nSpeakers: CCRC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/heath-reed\" target=\"_blank\">Heath Reed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/ivan-phelan\" target=\"_blank\">Ivan Phelan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/shirley-lindley\" target=\"_blank\">Shirley Lindley<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will outline how the different elements of this type of training was integrated into a virtual environment using haptic technology developed at SHU.<\/p>\n<p>We used an Oculus Rift headset, complimented with additional hardware including Microsoft&#8217;s Kinect to develop an immersive experience. The devices were connected through the Unity game engine to create fast prototyping and facilitate cross platform development. <\/p>\n<p>The haptic devices went through several iterations to provide sensations of pressure and vibration to mimic the experiences seen in the virtual world i.e. a surgeon placing a hand inside an open abdomen and feeling the organs inside. <\/p>\n<p>We will explore a future roadmap using the latest released technology and further MoD funding to develop the system to the next stage.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>1.00PM \u2013 2.00PM<br \/>\nTHURSDAY 04 June 2015<br \/>\nCANTOR 9140<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/seminars-201415\/?doing_wp_cron=1487779637.0036699771881103515625\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for details of other seminars in the series.<\/p>\n<p>All SHU staff and students are welcome to attend the C3RI Lunchtime Research Seminars.
