Penny McCarthy<\/a> was recently featured in a Corridor8 article titled ‘A City That Welcomes Art: Three Sheffield artists reflect on winning major prizes’.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The article endorses Sheffield’s creative landscape as going from strength to strength and describes 2019 as being a ‘bumper crop’ with three Sheffield artists securing major national prizes, of which Reader in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University Penny McCarthy was one.<\/p>\n

Penny McCarthy was awarded the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award<\/a>; a significant achievement putting her work in the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Penny McCarthy’s ‘Photo51’<\/p><\/div>\n

The prestigious prize was awarded on 25 September 2019 at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2019<\/a> on the basis of McCarthy’s proposal and two drawings, DNA in Nature<\/em><\/a> and Photo 51<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her work was subsequently exhibited at The Salisbury Museum in Wiltshire from 12 October 2019 to 11 January 2020 and again at Trinity Buoy Wharf from 18 January to 2 February 2020. It is currently showing at The Gallery at De Montfort University in Leicester (21 February to 18 April 2020). For more information on this, please read here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The award also led to a \u00a310,000 prize and solo exhibition at the respected Hastings Contemporary<\/a> in 2020-2021. As the Corridor8 article explains, the prospect of the solo show is a complete game-changer and presents a unique opportunity to establish a wider audience and experiment with new ideas.<\/p>\n

Penny McCarthy’s ‘DNA in Nature’<\/p><\/div>\n

Conor Rogers, a recent Fine Art graduate of Sheffield Hallam, is also featured in the article for winning the Robert Walters Group UK Young Artist of the Year prize<\/a>. His work is currently on display at the Robert Walters Group head office and will appear at an international presentation with UK Young Artists in 2020.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on Sheffield as ‘A City That Welcomes Art’<\/em>, the Corridor8 mentioned artists indicate that there is still a distinct need for continued funding models for the city to establish longevity and continue thriving in this area.<\/p>\n
