In his editorial, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14606925.2020.1703879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Root and Branch&#8217;<\/a>, editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/paul-atkinson\">Prof Paul Atkinson<\/a> considers a number of themes emerging in this issue&#8217;s papers.<\/p>\n<p>The first theme of \u2018developing cultures\u2019 is explored in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/james-corazzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Corazzo<\/a> (SHU Lecturer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.shu.ac.uk\/sia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graphic Design<\/a>), Harland, Alison Honnor and Rigley\u2019s article, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14606925.2019.1682446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Challenges for Graphic Design in Establishing an Academic Research Culture<\/a>\u2019 takes as its starting point the criticism levelled by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which found \u2018the intellectual and theoretical underpinning of graphic and communication design\u2026to be generically weak\u2019. From their analysis, five categories of views emerge responding to the criticisms against the discipline. The authors accept that graphic design is yet to establish an academic research culture in the UK, and numerous recommendations are made for academics and institutions to consider in strengthening the research standing of the discipline.<\/p>\n<p>The second theme addresses \u2018different types of practice and thinking\u2019 with papers by Sun and Hall. The third theme explores practices of everyday life with an article exploring the role of video as a research method in architecture, design and the humanities. The final theme is storytelling, with a PhD Study report on a system to support storytelling between older adults living in a nursing home and their children.<\/p>\n<p>The issue finishes with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14606925.2020.1673079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">book review<\/a> by Chris Goldie, Honorary Research Fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/academic-departments\/media-arts-and-communication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dept. of Media Arts and Communication<\/a>\u00a0at Sheffield Hallam University.
