Abstract<\/strong>
\nDemocratic societies have never been immune to disinformation. But in recent years scholars, politicians and journalists have become increasingly preoccupied by its apparent proliferation in the new communications environment. Especially in the aftermath of the EU referendum and the election of President Trump in the US, disinformation has been widely perceived as both a cause and consequence of those events, and symptomatic of a kind of truth disorder or \u2018cultural chaos\u2019. But the debate about disinformation is itself deeply politicised and ideological, with a dominant framing that conceives it largely as a toxic interaction between far-right\/left actors, major algorithms and Kremlin-controlled bots. This talk will challenge this narrative, pointing to evidence of widespread disinformation reverberating through mainstream press and broadcasters leading up to, and during, the 2019 general election campaign.<\/p>\n

Biography<\/strong>
\nDr Justin Schlosberg is Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Media at Birkbeck, University of London. He is a former Chair of the Media Reform Coalition and Edmund J Safra Fellow at Harvard University. His recent authored or co-authored books on the media include Bad News for Labour (2019, Pluto), The Media Manifesto (Polity, 2020) and the Media Ownership and Agenda Control (Routledge, 2016).<\/p>\n
