{"id":790,"date":"2017-02-20T17:39:01","date_gmt":"2017-02-20T17:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=790"},"modified":"2018-07-26T12:23:09","modified_gmt":"2018-07-26T11:23:09","slug":"staff-development-opportunity-andrew-robinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/staff-development-opportunity-andrew-robinson\/","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday 22 February 2017 &#8211; Staff development: The Photobook as a Teaching Tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/andrew-robinson\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Robinson<\/a><\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in Film &amp; Photography, introduces an afternoon of talks by both SHU staff and visiting speakers focusing on the book and self publishing as a vehicle for creative production along with its role within education and the potential it offers for marketing and career development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Title: The Photobook as a teaching tool \u2013 concept, design, making and marketing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Speakers:<br \/>\nMimi Mollica, Documentary photographer<br \/>\nMatt Johnston, Lecturer in Photographyer, Coventry University<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/james-corazzo\" target=\"_blank\">James Corazzo<\/a>, Principal Lecturer in Graphic Design, SHU<br \/>\nTheo Simpson, Visiting Lecturer in Photography, SHU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mimimollica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mimi Mollica<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Documentary photographer Mimi Mollica has covered assignments across the world for major outlets, magazines and organisations.<br \/>\nMimi researches and develops long-term personal projects, most of which have gained international recognition with awards, reviews and exhibitions. His work is featured in numerous prestigious books and magazines and is part of various permanent private and public collections such as The Museum of London and The Photographic Museum of Humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Mimi will be speaking about his long-term project Terra Nostra. He will guide us through a selection of the work including a short multimedia piece, and provide us with first-hand insights from the idea conception through to the production of the final book.<br \/>\nHe will also talk specifically on the crowdfunding campaign and the balance between doing everything yourself, whilst simultaneously having the backing of my publisher and enjoying the support of many people, friends and colleagues. In 2015 Mimi founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/photomeet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Offspring Photo Meet<\/a>, a yearly event dedicated to celebrate photography and it industry with a series of talks, projections, presentations and high-end portfolio reviews.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coventry.ac.uk\/life-on-campus\/staff-directory\/arts-and-humanities\/matt-johnston\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Johnston<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Matt works to promote and enable discussion around the physical photobook, launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/photobookclub.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photobook Club<\/a> in 2010. The project, which encourages groups and communities to form around the photobook currently has more than 50 active branches from Auckland to Bangalore. Matt is a photographer, educator and researcher based in the UK. His pioneering work at Coventry University co-developing several &#8216;world leading&#8217; open photography classes has received numerous plaudits from photography and education based peers around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theosimpson.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Theo Simpson<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Visiting Lecturer at SHU, photographer, self publisher, exhibition designer, Paul Huf Award nominee. Theo\u2019s talk will consider the diverse methodologies and strategies used to realise his project work in printed form along with the potential of the resulting outputs in both establishing and developing a professional arts practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/james-corazzo\" target=\"_blank\">James Corazzo<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Principle Lecturer in Design at SHU &amp; freelance designer specialising in photo book design. James&#8217; talk will explore the idea that making a photobook is not the making of one book, but many books. It is the artist\u2019s photobook, the publisher\u2019s photobook, the designer\u2019s photobook, perhaps even the editor\u2019s photobook and the printer\u2019s photobook. Creating a photobook is not the making of one photobook, but the making of many photobooks \u2013 the photobook multiple.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/andrew-robinson\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Robinson<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Senior Lecturer in Film and Photography at SHU. Whilst the photobook has long played an important role in both the practice and teaching of photography recent developments have placed the bookwork center stage in contemporary practice, Andrew&#8217;s talk explores the multi-layered and multi-skilled learning that photobook production promotes and considers the opportunities this presents to both teacher and learner.<\/p>\n<p>All are welcome and the event is free but you need to book.
