Professor Lise Autogena will be presenting\u00a0at Decolonising the\u00a0Nuclear<\/a>, <\/em>a public lecture and workshop taking place at Goldsmiths University of London next month.\u00a0The event, following on from the Nuclear Culture Research Symposium which took place in autumn 2018 is organised by the\u00a0Nuclear Culture Research Group<\/a>\u00a0and supported by\u00a0supported by the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership, Critical Ecologies Research Stream, and Mountain of Art Research (MARs) in partnership with Arts Catalyst, Art Action UK, MFA Curating and Goldsmiths University of London.<\/p>\n

The development of nuclear technology has always relied on colonial\u00a0practices of resource extraction, atomic testing on indigenous\u00a0lands, exporting nuclear installations, deployment of nuclear\u00a0weapons and radioactive waste storage. Many communities are already\u00a0living through the slow violence of atomic tests, radioactive\u00a0accidents and contaminated landscapes. Nuclear technology is at the\u00a0heart of the military industrial complex, often outside democratic\u00a0decision-making processes, yet it is often neglected in\u00a0contemporary discourses around decoloniality, climate crisis and\u00a0the Anthropocene.<\/p>\n

\"Image<\/a><\/p>\n

This year the Nuclear Culture Research Group is considering what it\u00a0means to decolonise our creative and academic research practices\u00a0within nuclear culture. In an academic context this starts with\u00a0tracing our own stories, expanding our networks and literature,\u00a0working with and alongside communities, and leads to rethinking\u00a0forms of knowledge and creative practices from completely new, or\u00a0perhaps very old, perspectives. However, nuclear decoloniality\u00a0starts with an attempt to re-couple the nuclear with colonial\u00a0histories that have been neglected in order to isolate research\u00a0into discreet work-packages for spurious reasons of security or in-depth scientific research. The workshop invites scholars of nuclear\u00a0culture and artist-researchers to share knowledge, ideas and\u00a0practices, to widen the scope, to extend and examine our nuclear\u00a0languages and create a space for people working closely with\u00a0different kinds of nuclear decoloniality from around the world.\u00a0This event is a small first step on a long journey to find ways to\u00a0work together.<\/p>\n

Workshop participants include: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Lise Autogena<\/a> is working with Joshua\u00a0Portway investigating the conflicts facing the small, mostly\u00a0indigenous, community of Narsaq in southern Greenland. Narsaq is\u00a0located next to the pristine Kvanefjeld mountain; site of one of\u00a0the richest rare earth mineral resources deposits in the world, and\u00a0one of the largest sources of uranium.<\/p>\n

Alex Ressel and Kerri Meehan\u00a0are artists from the UK and Australia currently living and working\u00a0at Injalak Arts Centre in Gunbalanya, near to the Nabarlek former\u00a0uranium mine and Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of\u00a0Australia.<\/p>\n

Fathima Nizaruddin will present her film Nuclear\u00a0Hallucinations (2016) which claims to be a documentary and explores\u00a0the anti-nuclear struggle against the Kudankulam Atomic Power\u00a0Project in South India.<\/p>\n

Ignacio Acosta is a Chilean-born, London-based artist and researcher working primarily with photography to\u00a0explore geopolitical power dynamics around minerals, their\u00a0geographies and historical narratives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Professor Gabrielle Hecht<\/a>\u00a0(Stanford University) will give a\u00a0keynote public lecture on her current research into nuclearity and\u00a0the Anthropocene on the Goldsmiths main campus on Tuesday 22\u00a0October, 6PM-8PM.<\/p>\n

The workshop roundtable will consider such questions as:<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2022 Nuclearity \u2013 what determines the category of the \u2018nuclear\u2019. Who\u00a0takes response-ability?<\/p>\n

\u2022 Nuclear ethics: whose voices are represented in nuclear studies,\u00a0histories, arts, sciences and humanities?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What are the asymmetries of the nuclear Anthropocene within our\u00a0own research?<\/p>\n

\u2022 How do we connect the material traces of uranium, radioactive\u00a0isotopes and waste across civil and military?<\/p>\n

\u2022 Whose energy, whose contamination: how are we embedded in global\u00a0nuclear networks?<\/p>\n

\u2022 How do we engage with non-alignment and different perspectives on\u00a0nuclear weapons policies?<\/p>\n

\u2022 How does interdisciplinary research between\u00a0art\/anthropology\/sociology\/environmental studies change how we\u00a0understand the nuclear?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What are the nuclear humanities approaches to field research?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What are our strategies and tactics for intergenerational\u00a0cultural communication over deep time?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What can we learn from wider indigenous land rights, especially\u00a0around mining \/ toxicity?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What kinds of nuclearity or critique is Science & Technology\u00a0Studies enabling?<\/p>\n

\u2022 What are the impacts of the Cold war on the present?<\/p>\n
