{"id":7257,"date":"2019-06-21T11:01:35","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T10:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=7257"},"modified":"2019-10-21T11:06:57","modified_gmt":"2019-10-21T10:06:57","slug":"age-emulsion-paul-atkinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/age-emulsion-paul-atkinson\/","title":{"rendered":"The Age of Emulsion: Paul Atkinson interview on the history of DIY on BBC Radio 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/paul-atkinson\">Prof Paul Atkinson<\/a> on the history of DIY is to be included in a broadcast on Radio 4&#8217;s Archive hour this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The 2008 BBC Radio 4 series <em>&#8216;A History of Home&#8217;<\/em> has been remixed for Radio 4&#8217;s Archive hour slot this Saturday night. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2019\/26\/the-age-of-emulsion\"><strong>The Age of Emulsion<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; featured Paul Atkinson&#8217;s interview with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Susan Marling for the series. Paul was invited to participate because of his research in \u2018DIY and Democracy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2019\/26\/the-age-of-emulsion\">Age Of Emulsion<\/a> is a story about our changing attitudes to housing, consumerism, national identity, sense of individuality, class, politics, and relationships between the sexes.<\/p>\n<p>Starting from the 1950s, Laurence draws on a rich TV and radio archive to show how DIY went from being a necessity after World War II, to a wholesome leisure activity, to a fully-blown national obsession.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Atkinson has published widely on design history, including guest editing a special issue on the subject of DIY from a design historical perspective in the <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jdh\">Journal of Design History<\/a> in 2006. More recent research has focussed on the world of\u00a0DIY\u00a0cigar box\u00a0guitar\u00a0makers<\/p>\n<p>The programme is broadcast on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/proginfo\/2019\/26\/the-age-of-emulsion\"><span class=\"date\">Saturday 22 June\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em\">8.00pm-9.00pm\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em\">BBC RADIO 4 and is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m00066xk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC Sounds<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An interview with Prof Paul Atkinson on the history of DIY is to be included in a broadcast on Radio 4&#8217;s Archive hour this weekend.
