{"id":7224,"date":"2019-06-13T12:22:19","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T11:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=7224"},"modified":"2023-01-20T17:15:59","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T17:15:59","slug":"lab4living-awarded-4-million-research-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/lab4living-awarded-4-million-research-england\/","title":{"rendered":"Lab4Living awarded \u00a34 million by Research England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/farming-robots-and-eco-buildings-the-future-as-research-kick-starts-new-innovations\">announced today<\/a> that interdisciplinary research group <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/\">Lab4Living<\/a> has\u00a0been awarded\u00a0\u00a34 million in\u00a0funding from Research England\u00a0in recognition of its <strong>excellence in design-led research<\/strong>. The award will allow the Lab to further develop its work through funded projects, public engagement and an expanded team of researchers and postgraduate students, with a particular focus on the 100 year life and the future home. A new Design4Ageing academy will increase engagement with the local community.<\/p>\n<p>Lab4Living is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/research-centres\/art-and-design-research-centre\">Art and Design Research Centre<\/a>, from which it evolved 12 years ago, at Sheffield\u00a0Hallam University. Since it was created in 2007, it has undertaken\u00a0research in design and creative practice culminating in\u00a0global\u00a0award winning products and interventions\u00a0that\u00a0promote quality of life and positively impact on people&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n<p>Co-Directors of Lab4Living\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/paul-chamberlain\">Professor Paul\u00a0Chamberlain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/claire-craig\">Dr. Claire Craig<\/a> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The award is a wonderful acknowledgement of\u00a0the work and talent\u00a0of an exceptional team. It is\u00a0both a\u00a0recognition of the role of design research\u00a0in affecting societal change and an endorsement by the leading national research funding body RCUK\u00a0of the quality of research that is being undertaken here.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The funding will provide a programme of\u00a0research centred around the <a href=\"https:\/\/lab4living.org.uk\/projects\/the-100-year-life-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>100-Year Life<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong>future home<\/strong>. It will offer an opportunity for the team to increase its engagement with the local community, business and extend its already extensive international partnerships. The award will enable Lab4Living to expand its team with the appointment of senior research staff and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/phds\/programme\/8-phd-studentships-in-art-and-design-100-year-life-and-the-future-home\/?p4403\">8 PhD studentships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research England\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Expanding Excellence in England\u2019 (E3) research fund is aimed\u00a0specifically at supporting the strategic expansion of excellent research units and departments in Higher Education institutions (HEIs) across England. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/jim-roddis\">Emeritus Professor\u00a0Jim Roddis<\/a>, founder of the\u00a0Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam\u00a0University\u00a0and key Lab4Living mentor and advisor, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This was a highly competitive process with applications from every subject area. Work has spanned more than 100 research projects and has included collaborations in over 80 academic, hospital and community organisations in over 15 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Lab4Living has developed a regular series of events and publications.
