The third issue of Volume 22 of The Design Journal<\/strong> has now been published, and includes a book review by SHU Graphic Design lecturer Jame Corazzo. In his editorial, Transitions<\/a>, editor Prof Paul Atkinson<\/a>\u00a0draws parallels with song lyrics exploring themes of change and transition. Paul notes that ‘designers deal with change on an everyday basis, and change inevitably involves the transition from one state of affairs to another. Many of the papers in this particular issue involve transitions of one kind or another’.<\/p>\n

Papers in this issue explore transitions between different work patterns over time,\u00a0the shift from products to services in service startups, and\u00a0potential shifts in the role of the professional designer in the take-up of amateur or lay design input in the design process.<\/p>\n

The issue includes a review by\u00a0James Corazzo<\/a>\u00a0of the book\u00a0Crits: A Student Manual<\/i>\u00a0by Terry Barrett<\/a>.\u00a0James Corazzo, Principal Lecturer in Graphic Design at Sheffield Hallam University, ‘dissects the manual with some wit, and tries the techniques suggested with his own students. As a result, he assesses its value to be as much for the educator as for the student.’<\/p>\n

The Design Journal is the official journal of the European Academy of Design<\/strong> (EAD), which which held its biannual conference\u00a0at the University of Dundee last month. This year’s conference included paper presentations and workshops by Sheffield Hallam University Art & Design Research Centre staff Dr Gemma Wheeler<\/a>, Dr Claire Craig<\/a>, James Corazzo<\/a> and Helen Fisher<\/a>.
