You can find the programme online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freud.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Surrealism_Programme.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0and the abstracts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freud.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Surrealism_Abstracts_-Biographies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt would be very interesting to investigate analytically how a picture like this came to be painted.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; Freud<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1938 Salvador Dal\u00ed met Freud in London, bringing with him his painting\u00a0<em>Metamorphosis of Narcissus<\/em>\u00a0and a new article about his \u2018paranoiac-critical\u2019 method, first described in his book\u00a0<em>Conquest of the Irrational<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Freud was an inspiration for the Surrealists and they were well-versed in his ideas, particularly his work on dream theory, free association, and investigations into the workings of the unconscious. In the 1924 Surrealist Manifesto, Andr\u00e9 Breton defined Surrealism as \u201cpure psychic automatism\u201d, in other words, the uncensored workings of the unconscious. In later years Jacques Lacan\u2019s close relationship with the Surrealists led to a lasting bond that continued to link psychoanalysis and surrealism until the present day.
