Title: Absence-Presence: Kos
\nSpeaker: Dr David Swann<\/a>, Subject Group Leader Product & Furniture Design, SHU<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Summer of 2015 witnessed the mass migration of people seeking refuge, safety and security in Europe.
\nOver 1 million people made the perilous sea crossing to the Greek islands of Lesvos, Chios, Leros, Samos and Kos.
\nAt its peak, the small island of Kos was receiving 200-500 new arrivals each day. With no official reception facilities in
\nplace, a newly formed volunteer group (Kos-Solidarity) provided much needed care, food and clothing. <\/p>\n

Since October 2015, David Swann has been collaborating with Kos-Solidarity and planned trip to Kos in April 2016
\ncoincided with the exact date that the EU\/Turkey agreement came into force. This event proved to be a game-changer
\nand the catalyst for new research investigation. This seminar will present the backstory, the trip and the formative ideas
\nfor a project that will seek to narrate the stories of Kos\u2019s refugees and the work of Kos-Solidarity through spectral artefacts.<\/p>\n
