{"id":6264,"date":"2019-02-20T10:42:28","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T10:42:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=6264"},"modified":"2019-04-05T13:26:50","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T12:26:50","slug":"johnson-launch-ships-in-the-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/johnson-launch-ships-in-the-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;SHIPS in the SKY&#8217; &#8211; Professor Esther Johnson&#8217;s arts project launches at Hull Central Library on Wednesday 27 February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A launch for Professor Esther Johnson&#8217;s arts project <a href=\"https:\/\/shipsinthesky.weebly.com\"><strong>SHIPS in the SKY<\/strong><\/a> will take place on <strong>Wednesday 27 February<\/strong> at <strong>Hull Central Library<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by artist and filmmaker <strong>Esther Johnson<\/strong> in partnership with Hull Libraries&#8217; oral history project\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/untoldhull.org\/\"><strong>Untold Hull<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>SHIPS in the SKY<\/strong> is a <strong>film, oral history and exhibition project <\/strong>that will uncover peoples\u2019 memories of a treasured Kingston-Upon-Hull city landmark.<\/p>\n<p>The focus for the project is the former <strong>Hull &amp; East Riding Co-operative Society<\/strong><br \/>\nstore in Jameson Street, later \u2018BHS\u2019, and the murals on and inside the building by<br \/>\nartist <strong>Alan Boyson<\/strong>, who died in 2018. The <strong>Three Ships<\/strong> mural in particular \u2013 one of the largest pieces of public art in the UK \u2013 has been loved by Esther from childhood.<\/p>\n<p>The central theme of the <strong>SHIPS in the SKY<\/strong> looks at <strong>how architecture shapes and is shaped by local and cultural identity<\/strong>, and on how public art can effect peoples\u2019 navigation and<br \/>\nmemories of the public realm.<\/p>\n<p>The life of this iconic building has had many lives \u2013 a department store, an indoor market, a dance hall, a music venue and nightclub. Memories were made there and the building has played a part in the lives of so many in Hull. On closure in 2016, the building canopy acted as shelter for the homeless and now lays empty awaiting redevelopment or demolition. During Hull&#8217;s 2017 City of Culture, the building acted as backdrop to numerous public events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SHIPS in the SKY<\/strong> aims to tell some of these stories and will culminate in an exhibition travelling to venues around Hull in late 2019, and a final project exhibition including film installation and symposium in late 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/ships-in-the-sky-artist-talk-tickets-55216240261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SHIPS in the SKY &#8211;
