{"id":6084,"date":"2019-02-12T10:43:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T10:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=6084"},"modified":"2021-02-17T10:51:30","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T10:51:30","slug":"transmission-ling-jacques","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/transmission-ling-jacques\/","title":{"rendered":"Transmission: Yuen Fong Ling and Juliet Jacques &#8211; Tuesday 19 February 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A two-part talk, followed by a conversation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/yuen-fong-ling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yuen Fong Ling<\/a> will explore the construction of \u2018self\u2019 through tactical life modelling where the artist\u2019s body is a supplement to other historical bodies, focusing on the recent project <em>Towards Memorial<\/em>, which examines the legacy of socialist, writer, poet, and activist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Carpenter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Carpenter<\/a> (1844 \u20131929), through the making, gifting, and wearing of a pair of sandals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/julietjacques.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juliet Jacques<\/a> will explore how fiction\u2014and particularly historical fiction\u2014can be useful to the trans community. Jacques will read excerpts from <em>The Woman in the Portrait<\/em>, 2014, and from her forthcoming collection of short stories.<\/p>\n<p>Yuen Fong Ling is an artist, researcher, and lecturer based in Sheffield. Completing a PhD at University of Lincoln in 2016, entitled <em>A Body of Relations: Reconfiguring the Life Class<\/em>, and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Sheffield Institute of Art, Ling is the recipient of the Freelands Artists Programme award 2018\u201320 hosted by Site Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Juliet Jacques is a writer and filmmaker based in London. Her most recent book is <em>Trans: A Memoir<\/em> (Verso, 2015). Her latest short film <em>You Will Be Free<\/em> (2017) has screened at galleries and festivals worldwide. Convened by Sharon Kivland in 2001,\u00a0<em>Transmission<\/em>\u00a0was developed collaboratively with Lesley Sanderson from 2001 to 2004, and with Jasper Joseph-Lester from 2004 to 2012. The\u00a0series is now convened by Sharon Kivland, TC McCormack, Hester\u00a0Reeve,\u00a0and Julie\u00a0Westerman,\u00a0in association with Site\u00a0Gallery,\u00a0Sheffield. The lecture series has an annual theme, and involves students\u00a0from\u00a0Fine\u00a0Art,\u00a0fromundergraduates\u00a0to\u00a0PhDs.<\/p>\n<p><em>Transmission<\/em> is the passing of information via a channel, and this is the intention of the <em>Transmission<\/em> project. We enquire about the aesthetic and discursive forms required by practices in the field of contemporary art and theory that address sociality and subjectivity. It has encompassed a lecture programme, seminar discussions, an annual symposium, a print portfolio, four series of books: Transmission Annual, The Rules of Engagement, Transmission chapbooks, and five volumes of discussions\/interviews, entitled Transmission: Speaking and Listening. These are published by Artwords Press, London.<\/p>\n<p>Site Gallery\u00a0is Sheffield\u2019s international contemporary art space, specialising in moving image, new media, and performance.
