Professor Virginia Heath’s new film\u00a0Lift Share<\/em><\/a> will screen in Official Competition at the\u00a0Underwire Festival<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday 24 November at the Barbican Cinema<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n

Co-written by\u00a0Berlinale award-winning, and BAFTA nominated, Director\u00a0Virginia Heath<\/a>, the film (22 minutes) is part of a diverse and challenging shorts programme called\u00a0Family Matters<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0Family Matters\u00a0<\/em>promises to explore familiar relationships from many angles:\u00a0“Extraordinary situations merge with the everyday to explore notions of grief, alienation, shame, belonging and love.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Underwire is a\u00a0BAFTA\u00a0qualifying\u00a0#feminist<\/a>\u00a0film festival – the UK\u2019s largest celebrating female filmmaking talent.<\/p>\n

\"Promo<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Lift Share<\/em>, two strangers meet through an online lift share website: a young Romanian woman in desperate search of a child that was forcibly taken from her and a Scottish musician returning to the Isle of Harris to face up to the death of his violent, estranged father. \u00a0As they drive through the Scottish Highlands, the film moves between present and future time frames as each character imagines what they might do when they reach the Outer Hebrides.\u00a0 Alone with their fears, the\u00a0haunting beauty of the remote Islands helps them\u00a0find escape from their past pain. The comfort that only strangers can bring enables them to share a moment of hope for the future.<\/p>\n

The film was made with support from\u00a0Creative Scotland<\/a>,\u00a0BFI.NETWORK<\/a>,\u00a0Scottish Film Talent Network<\/a>, An Comhairle (Western Isles Council),\u00a0Faction North<\/a>, Kolik Films and the Art & Design Research Centre (ADRC<\/a>) at Sheffield Hallam University.<\/p>\n

Professor Virginia Heath<\/a>\u00a0is a Professor of Film in the\u00a0Art and Design Research Centre<\/a>\u00a0at Sheffield Hallam University, and is a writer, film-maker and researcher. Virginia has written and directed several award winning films and her films are screened at international film festivals including Berlin, Cannes, The Hamptons, New York, Vancouver, St Petersburg. Virginia\u2019s projects include\u00a0My Dangerous Loverboy<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2009)\u00a0 a powerful multi-platform project addressing human-trafficking and sexual-exploitation which formed the basis of\u00a0an outstanding\u00a0Impact Case Study<\/a>\u00a0 for Unit of Assessment 34: Art & Design (History, Theory & Practice) in REF2014, and\u00a0From Scotland with Love<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2014) a feature-length poetic documentary combining archive footage and original music composition which received a BAFTA Scotland nomination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
