Public screening of the documentary film<\/strong>\u00a0Kuannersuit \/ Kvanefjeld<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and panel discussion on uranium mining hosted by\u00a0Ilisimatusarfik \/ University of Greenland<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Lise Autogena<\/a>\u00a0will present\u00a0Kuannersuit \/ Kvanefjeld<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a documentary film (30 minutes) created in 2016 with long-term collaborator\u00a0Joshua Portway<\/a>\u00a0on 08 October 2018 at the University of Greenland. The film is based on the Australian mining company GME\u2019s plans for mining at\u00a0Kvanefjeld, which involves extraction of some of the world\u2019s largest stocks of rare earths and uranium.The film explores the local population\u2019s perceptions of the mining project, and asks the following questions:<\/p>\n

How can a democratic conversation take place if the government\u2019s desire for major international mining investments is at odds with a large part of the population\u2019s desire for amore long-term environment-friendly vision for the future?<\/p>\n

How can a democratic discussion take place if urgent problems can not be discussed because of fear of disagreement?<\/p>\n

Following the screening, Lise Autogena will discuss the film and explore to what extent art and culture might play a role in facilitating a different conversation and panel discussion. She will be joined by the following speakers:<\/p>\n
