This September brings the return of the Sheffield Festival of the Mind<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0a unique collaboration between our academic colleagues and experts from Sheffield\u2019s cultural and creative industries. Chlo\u00eb Brown<\/a> and Yuen Fong Ling<\/a> are presenting artists’ talks at the Spiegeltent<\/a>\u00a0over the next couple of weeks, in collaboration with Making Ways<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n

Penny McCarthy<\/a>\u00a0will also be showing a new series of over 100 paintings as part of a collaborative commission on a new theatre work, Beware the Cat<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In collaboration with Festival of the Mind<\/em>, Making Ways<\/em> is running a series of free talks by Sheffield based artists. Grab some lunch, come along and find out about art happening in the city. These talks form part of Making Ways<\/em>, a new programme supported by Sheffield Culture Consortium through Arts Council England to showcase, celebrate and develop the exceptional contemporary visual art produced in the city.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yuen Fong Ling<\/a>\u00a0– Towards Memorial: After Edward Carpenter (1844-1929)<\/em><\/a><\/strong>
\nFriday 21 September, 1PM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Towards Memorial<\/em> explores the (re) making of bespoke sandals originally designed and made by socialist, writer, poet and activist Edward Carpenter<\/a>. The presentation considers the act of remembrance, protest and resistance by wearing a pair of sandals\u2026with socks!<\/p>\n

Chlo\u00eb Brown<\/a>\u00a0– A Soft Rebellion in Paradise<\/em><\/a><\/strong>
\nMonday 24th September, 1PM
\n<\/strong>
\nSheffield-based artist Chlo\u00eb Brown presents a series of Soft Rebellions<\/em> in post-industrial cities Stoke-on-Trent, Detroit and Sheffield. The Soft Rebellions<\/em> involve dancing, eating, meeting and applauding in places where it is considered inappropriate to do so. What if we understood the language of cats? William Baldwin’s satirical 16th century novel\u00a0Beware the Cat<\/em><\/a> tells the story of a curious theologian whose alchemical experiments reveal the talk of cats amongst themselves. This entertaining and visual performance reading brings Baldwin’s book to the stage for the first time.<\/p>\n

This collaboration brings together a unique combination of researchers and experts from the fields of contemporary theatre, adaptation studies, fine art, animal studies, linguistics, and early modern studies: Penny McCarthy<\/a>\u00a0(Reader in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University),\u00a0Rachel Stenner<\/a>,\u00a0Frances Babbage<\/a>,\u00a0Terry O\u2019Connor<\/a>,\u00a0Bill McDonnell<\/a>,\u00a0Bob McKay<\/a>,\u00a0Robyn Orfitelli<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chlo\u00eb Brown<\/a>\u00a0is an artist and Senior Lecturer\/Course Leader in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University, living in Sheffield, UK. She has an MA in Sculpture from Chelsea College of Art, London (1994), and a BA in Fine Art from the University of Reading (1987).<\/p>\n

Yuen Fong Ling<\/a>\u00a0is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University.<\/p>\n
