At the heart of a laser-beam is a vibrating crystal, touch-screen technologies, and the optical cables that keep us connected, are all enabled by this\u00a0extraordinary material substance.<\/p>\n<p>LCD takes shape around an ambitious new commission by artist Anna Barham, titled Crystal Fabric Field. Based on the fundamental geometric form of naturally growing crystals,\u00a0the sculpture operates as a cabinet of curiosities, housing artworks by 16 other artists, all exploring the material possibilities of crystals. 6PM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join us for a lecture and conversation with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbk.ac.uk\/arts\/english\/our-staff\/full-time-academic-staff\/leslie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Esther Leslie<\/a>, chaired by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/penny-mccarthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Penny McCarthy<\/a>.\u00a0This lecture will draw from Esther Leslie\u2019s book\u00a0<em>Liquid Crystals: The Science and Art of a Fluid Form<\/em>\u00a0which tells the history of the \u2018liquid crystal\u2019 epoch, spanning from 1820 to today, detailing the key interminglings of the liquid and crystalline located in politics, philosophy and art during this time.\u00a0She is also writing for the catalogue for\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sitegallery.org\/liquid-crystal-display\/\">Liquid Crystal Display<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Esther Leslie is Professor of Political Aesthetics at Birkbeck, University of London. She is the author of\u00a0<em>Hollywood Flatlands: Animation, Critical Theory<\/em>\u00a0<em>and the Avant Garde<\/em>\u00a0(2000),\u00a0<em>Synthetic Worlds: Nature, Art and the Chemical Industry\u00a0<\/em>(Reaktion, 2005), and the editor and translator of\u00a0<em>On Photography<\/em>\u00a0by Walter Benjamin (Reaktion, 2015).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitegallery.org\/event\/discussion-exorcising-the-present-ghosts-of-our-immediate-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lecture: Antony Hudek and David Morris<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>E<em>xorcising the present ghosts of our immediate future.<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Thursday 06 December 2018,\u00a04.30PM &#8211; 6PM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1998 Site held an exhibition called <em>star dot star<\/em> which itself looked back to an exhibition at the ICA in 1968 called <em>Cybernetic Serendipity<\/em> which was heralded as one of the first exhibitions to incorporate art and technology. 2018 is a 20 and 50 year loop from these exhibitions and a moment when Site is also looking to the archive in preparation for the 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year of the organisation in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Jeanine Griffin, Site\u2019s current PhD researcher, speakers include Antony Hudek on another key exhibition in relation to technology: Les Immateriaux, 1985, and David Morris of <em>Afterall (<\/em>Central St Martin\u2019s) who runs an exhibition histories project.<\/p>\n<p>Antony Hudek is a Belgium based curator and director of the Curatorial Studies postgraduate programme at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) of University College Ghent.<\/p>\n<p>David Morris is a writer, researcher and educator.\u00a0 He is an editor of\u00a0<em>Afterall\u00a0<\/em>journal (Central Saint Martins, London) and managing editor of Afterall\u2019s\u00a0<em>Exhibition Histories\u00a0<\/em>series, and teaches at University of the Arts, London.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/lise-autogena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Lise Autogena<\/a> is an artist and a Professor of Cross-Disciplinary Art at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cultural Communication and Computing Research Institute<\/a> at Sheffield Hallam University.
