The ‘Galvanizing the Women’s Movement’ conference will\u00a0take place on Thursday 6th September 2018. The conference is hosted by Sheffield Hallam University<\/a>‘s Cultural, Communication and Computing Research Institute (C3RI<\/a>). It is the fourth in a series of annual Shared Solidarities events and is sponsored by MeCCSA<\/a>, The Media, Cultural and Communication Studies Association for higher education.<\/p>\n

The event aims to reflect on current feminist campaigning, particularly in light of the various impacts of MeToo and TimesUp. It is free and open to all and refreshments are provided. Everyone who wishes to attend will need to register beforehand via Eventbrite using the link below.<\/p>\n

MeToo was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke to draw attention to sexual violence. It was adopted as a hashtag in 2017 firstly in response to the ‘Silence Breakers’ who exposed the extent of sexual coercion in Hollywood. Following celebrity support and funding for working class women in the USA to take legal action against their abusers, plus increased media revelations of abuse, women worldwide have been speaking out about their experiences of harassment and assault. At the same time, existing women’s campaigns have been emboldened to take tougher action – with the resultant widespread ‘backlash’.<\/p>\n

Galvanizing the Women’s Movement will provide a forum for considering the many effects of MeToo. Involving both community campaigners and academic activists, there will be a mixture of panels and keynote speakers discussing MeToo’s influence both on feminist politics generally and their own experience of campaigning on issues such as: sexual harassment at work; women and sport; sexual abuse and trafficking; action against Spearmint Rhino clubs.<\/p>\n

Registration closes on 31 August 2018.<\/strong> You are advised to register early as places are limited. The venue is at the University’s City Campus site (opposite Sheffield railway station) and is disability-friendly.<\/strong><\/p>\n
