{"id":4881,"date":"2018-05-31T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T10:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=4881"},"modified":"2018-06-26T16:19:37","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T15:19:37","slug":"creative-interruptions-palestinian-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/creative-interruptions-palestinian-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Creative Interruptions presents &#8216;Cinema of the Palestinian Revolution&#8217; on 11 June 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Until recently films produced by the Palestinian Film Institute were thought to have been either looted or destroyed during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativeinterruptions.com\/\">Creative Interruptions<\/a> project (which is exploring artistic expressions of oppressed communities), researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/\">Sheffield Hallam University<\/a> have participated in the work of retrieving Palestinian films from the 1970s and the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Azza El Hassan, a Palestinian film maker, resident in the UK, found the films of Hani Jawharieh (1939-1976) in the latter\u2019s family home and this prompted further search. Azza El Hassan<br \/>\n(14 mins, 2004) A filmic introduction to the search for Palestinian archives.<\/p>\n<p><em>Zahrat Al-Madain AKA The Flower of all Cities<\/em> (1969) (7mins) dir Ali Siam, Cinematography: Hani Jawharieh<br \/>\nA harmonious picture of Palestinian civil life is disturbed by the Israeli army\u2019s occupation of the city following the 1967 war with Israel. Set to the sound track, \u201cThe Flowers of all Cities\u201d, a famous song by Fairouz, the film retains contemporary relevance.<\/p>\n<p><em>Palestine in the Eye 1976 dir PLO Film Unit\/Mustafa Abu Ali<\/em> (28mins)<br \/>\nThe profound impact of Hani Jawharieh\u2019s death for the PLO Media Unit is reflected upon through interviews with family, colleagues and his own cinematography, including the moment of his death while filming for the Unit. Through its reflection on Jawharieh we are offered an understanding of the workings of the Palestine Film Unit and its international connections.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Urgent Call of Palestine dir Ismail Shammout<\/em> (5 mins, 1973 )<br \/>\nShammout records a solidarity song to announce the most urgent call for Palestine.<\/p>\n<p><em>Glow of Memories dir Ismail Shammout<\/em> (12 mins, 1972)<br \/>\nShammout\u2019s paintings narrate the memories of an old Palestinian man.<\/p>\n<p><em>Palestinian Identity dir Kassem Hawal<\/em> (1984) (40 mins)<br \/>\nIn the year 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon and occupied its capital Beirut. The film documents the burnt and destroyed cultural and educational centres from which Israelis stole films, photographs, historical and contemporary manuscripts.
