{"id":4816,"date":"2018-05-14T15:36:44","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T14:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/?p=4816"},"modified":"2018-11-12T12:13:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T12:13:14","slug":"without-brutality-docfest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/c3riimpact\/without-brutality-docfest\/","title":{"rendered":"Without Brutality: 25 Years of the Art and Design Research Centre &#8211; Professor Esther Johnson curates Sheffield Doc\/Fest film programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>\u2018Life <\/em><strong>without<\/strong><em> industry is guilt, and industry without art is <\/em><strong>brutality<\/strong><em>.&#8217;<\/em> \u2013 John Ruskin<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>2018 sees the <strong>25th anniversaries<\/strong> of both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sheffdocfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doc\/Fest<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/research\/specialisms\/cultural-communication-and-computing-research-institute\/research-centres\/art-and-design-research-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art and Design Research Centre<\/a> <\/strong>(ADRC)\u00a0at <strong>Sheffield Hallam University<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffdocfest.com\/films\/6609?day=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Without Brutality<\/em><\/strong><\/a> consists of films by students and staff of the university, from 1969 to 1993, when the art school was integrated into Sheffield Hallam University and the Art and Design Research Centre was formed. 2018 also marks the<strong> 175th anniversary<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.shu.ac.uk\/sia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sheffield Institute of Arts<\/strong><\/a> (SIA) at Hallam. Her poetic portraits focus on marginal worlds, revealing resonant stories that may otherwise remain hidden or ignored. Work has been exhibited internationally in 40 countries, and has also featured on television and radio. In 2012 Johnson won the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Performing and Visual Arts for young scholars. She is a Professor of Film &amp; Media Art at Sheffield Hallam University.
